is my re-amp box broken?

I made a 5 min video above comparing the difference between me just recording straight from guitar--amp--mic vs. reamping.

The difference in sound is as stark as Bon Jovi vs. Fear Factory.

Am I doing something wrong here? I have until tomorrow night (January 22nd) to decide whether i am going to return this or not. I am totally willing to admit this may be user error, but I don't know. At least, when I press the button which switches the signal from +4 dB to -10 dB and it gets louder (?) has gotten be broken.

any advice is much appreciated...
