Default Crazy in Love - Mr. VCR

This track was recorded in my son's studio by Soren Matson and his band (aka Mr. VCR) and produced by Soren and my son working together. They tried to blend a retro vibe with a more modern song that Soren had written. How do you like it?

Nice tune, great vibe and recording, love the artist/band name. There's a bit of a 70s soft-rock thing in there I can't quite put my finger on, almost 10CC'ish or something.

Thanks Karbo,

Thanks for responding. I have never asked Shea (my son) specifically what they used as inspiration for the sounds and arrangement the recording. To me, it is a an odd mix of auditory memes. Chord changes like 10cc or Toto, The synth lead line has a lounge band sound. Hand claps remind me of 60s bubblegum pop. Style of vocal recording from 70s. Lyrics that are modern and cutting.

As always, the question is how efforts to be unique work for the listener. So your comments are valued.

Thanks Barry. I take another up-vote as a good sign, especially given your long experience.

Hi again Karbo. Anybody who's ever been on the Ocean City Maryland boardwalk knows about the Purple Moose. It's been there forever and lots of good bands visit. You had mentioned before that you played there. Ocean City is about a 90 minute drive from here, but Shea is currently working with several bands that make the treck from there to record with him.

Really nice. Very rich sounding. A lot of unique touches along with some retro feel. The vocal is especially well recorded. You know, I just never get tired of that handclap rhythm in songs.

Shea will be pleased to hear that the vocal recording comes across well. Thanks for that insight.

Perhaps your love for handclapping is a throwback to the very distant past. We know that Neanderthals were making music 60,000 years ago,

and I would think that it is a near certainty that hand-clapping has been a part of music for even longer than that. I wonder if it is in our genes in the same way that speech is.

Made me think of Gerry Rafferty's 1978 song "Right Down the Line," especially the vocal. I've heard that song so many times with its very "clean" and clear vocal. Reminds me of what I hear in Crazy in Love. Interesting lyrics.

Thanks Bucca anad Peterk312. It is interesting how a recording can trigger different associations in the minds of differnet listeners. After reading your comments, I looked up some of Bread's recordings as well as some from Gerry Rafferty and listened to them anew. I can definitely hear the similarities with Crazy in Love that you noticed. I really do like how Rafferty's vocal on Right Down the Line is recorded. I don't remember noticing how well that was done before. It is definitely something to aspire to emulate.

I really like this song once it gets into it. I love the unexpected chord changes, and the vocals/harmonies are super nice.
