Default Adding photos to a video? (like a slideshow)

Hi,
I need to help my daughter make a video presentation for school which would show photos over time (a different photo every few seconds, so like a slideshow) and over which we need to overlay text.

The thing is, when I go to the Media Explorer containing photos, Reaper shows it as emptly so...can I add photos and make a video/slideshow and if so, how do I add the photos then?
Thanks,

Hi Chumbo,

you can just drag and drop photos on tracks in Reaper. YOu don't have to use the media explorer, you can just drag them from explorer into Reapers arrange window.

Here you see how you work with them. At first, go to menu -> view and open the video window. Place it in the docker or leave it floating. Whenever the play cursor gets over a picture instance, it will be shown in the video window.
You can stretch the photos in time and you can position them on different tracks. By default the track above covers the image of the track below. And if all of that works for you, you can use the video processor to create transitions between the pictures.

If you need more help. Just ask.

Oh, I forgot to answer your question about then text overlay. To achieve that place a video processor in your FX chain and choose the preset text overlay. The rest is self explaining. If you want text with shadow you can take mordi's text preset. You find it here: https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=213832

Another hint to make a photo show more pleasing is to scale and pan the photos while showing them. This makes it more interesting and gives the viewer the illusion of watching a movie.

To pan and scale use the track/opacity/zoom/pan preset. Here is a quick example. (But of course way to fast. )

Brilliant! Thanks so much for taking the time to explain that in detail...with examples!
Very kind of you

this is not really new. Slideshows were possible in v4. I once did a powerpoint presentation about reaper with the big reveal that I'd been in reaper the whole time. lol
I was just using png files on the timeline and used the Goto next marker function to go to next slide.

I've been making my videos with reaper since the 5.0 betas which is about 4 years ago.

One thing I'll add to Eliseat's explanation is that you can loop the images rather than stretch. Basically the same thing really, maybe slight difference in cpu. (shrug)
I have looping of imported media turned off in preferences, so I manually enable looping on images. If I don't loop it will just play for 1 second and then disappear, no matter how long the item is. Just wanted to point that out in case you run into that too

I could have sworn there was a setting for the default length of imported images, but I’m not sure how to find it, and may be confusing it with some other software. If it’s not a thing, it should be a feature request. But also alt+drag stretching the item works with images and video the same as audio or midi.

This is maybe overkill, but if you have a lot of photos and don’t want to spend the time laying them all out on the timeline, you can put them all on separate tracks, stretch/loop them to the full length of the project, and put my AutoSwitch preset on another track above all the rest. This thread also has my TriggerSwitch preset which allows you to draw the switches as automation or even use a controller.

it did get put in at some point.

Preferences - Video/import/misc

Still image thumbnail - [4 options] default length (ms): [3000]

you can put a negative there for specific number of frames

OOOOOOH! Thanks for this top tip!

Im generating A.I. animation frames, and then upscaling the frames on PC, adding the frames to Reaper and saving out as a video animation. I've been playing with BPM as a way to get round the length of each frame. I've been importing images at 50bpm, then go up until I get smooth playback, sometimes up at 960bpm

Still image length is what I need (I think?).

I may have been remembering some other software anyway, but I’m glad to know Reaper has it. :P

What are you using for this? Also, is “upscaling on PC” better than just zoom in the video processor?

Oh. Yeah that’s different. How are you generating the animation to begin with?
