Default Can't Hear Virtual Instruments on Mac?

I'm experienced with Reaper on PC but new to it on Mac.

I can't seem to hear any virtual instruments on my MacBook. I'm trying to use just the ReaSamplomatic to test. I set the track input to MIDI: Virtual MIDI Keyboard - All Chanels. I armed the track to record. I switched "Record Monitoring" to "On."

I CAN see the little red line going up when I click notes on the virtual keyboard. But I cannot hear anything. I also can't hear it after having recorded MIDI notes to the track, which works fine. Just can't hear anything.

I CAN hear regular audio just fine - an audio item on another track is playing, etc.

Is there something different about a Mac that I'm not getting?

Thanks!

Ken

Actually, I just tried aui MIDI Synth and that is perfect! So I'll use that for now. Just not sure why the other stuff isn't working.
