Default Decent Gm2 VST for Reaper, any suggestions?

I do miss the TTS in Sonar...was really cool for doing simple checks of files pre-purchase or tweaking...

Is there anything Reaper users can recommend to replace it?

I use the vsti version of Roland Sound Canvas to sort out the sounds on un tagged GM midi files. It can't load external sounds and presets don't sound that great but it does the job very well, midi cc's, effects and all.

Check out BassMIDIVSTi by Falcosoft. Minimal just like Reaper. Runs fast and smooth but last update was 2 years ago.

If you're cool with using LV2 plugins, check out GM Synth by x42 plugins. It comes with it's own soundfont but if you want you can replace it with the one you prefer. Just name the replacement with the same name as the stock. This one needs a ReaControlMIDI to tweak things.

I tried TAL Sampler but it's too complicated for me for simple soundfont playing. Also not free.

Actually, IIRC from an old post at the older cakewalk forums, I think the TTS1 is based on that Roland SC in some way.

Is there a free legal download for TTS-1 64 bit VSTi (or 64 bit DXi) ?

Enable Cakewalk plugins (including TTS-1) in another DAW:

BTW: You don't have to install Cakewalk's studio instruments pack to get TTS-1. It is installed by default within Cakewalk.

The other instruments (E-Piano, Bass, Strings, Drums) are optional.

Nah, afaik was/is proprietary for Cakewalk/12 Tone. I've used it before in Reaper when I still had Sonar installed, but that's been ages.

Thanks, yeah that's one that was listed above.

I'm trialling it at the mo....seems pretty easy to use, no patch changing (as in externally from with Reaper - that I can see-but I don't really need that anyway.) It's more just for testing MIDIS to see if they're total crap or not. hahaha about 75% are

In that case, you don't need a plugin at all. Just create a hardware output send on a track to your system's gm player. GS Wavetable Synth for windows, not sure what it's called on mac.

If you are on Windows, as said before, just load the midi onto a track, and then click on the "routing" button for that track, and in the top right, where it says "MIDI hardware output", the top item will say <no output>, click on this and select the "Microsoft GS Wavetable synth" ...

No need to do anything else if you are just using it to audition downloaded MIDI files.

Hope this helps (if you are on a Mac, sorry, can't help ...)
