Which way to go ??

I'm a self taught player and usually get where I want to go with a song through trial and error.
In this riff I'm messing with I bounce off Em7/Em7#9 would like to travel a different path then i,iv,v in Em
I messed with ii,V,I in DM a little.

From a theoretic view what options are available ?

Or forget the theory, where would you go next ?

Any direction you feel

The vocals are just reminder for me what my original idea was for the melody. Not necessarily the song theme.

That's a killer riff.

I know you don't want to use the old I IV V, but give a listen to Johnny Winters "Hiway 61 Revisted"



How he hangs on that I chord for so long, and how in the return, the V chord goes back to the I chord instead of the traditional V IV then I.

I had forgotten how much of a bad ass Jonny Winters is. I played the shit out of this album(and others) back in the day.

My oldest brother gave me that album when he came home for Christmas one year while he was in college. I think I was a freshman or sophomore in high school.

I was hooked from the get go.
