Default Microphone Feedback

Is there a simple way to mute a microphone without returning to the sound card utility? I would like to audition what has just been recorded without live mics. The feedback is unbearable.

This would be simple if I used an outboard mixer, but I do everyting from the PC screen. When recording or rehearsing, I don't need to monitor mics through Reaper. I have a separate headphone mix. Thanks

Use a microphone with a switch.

Welcome to the forum.

There is a little speaker icon on each track in Reaper's Mixer Control Panel. It's a clickable button which toggles between Record Monitoring modes. Record Monitoring is on by default.

I'd tell you what to do, but I think you know.

Easiest is to tie a keyboard command to the master fader's mute button or similar but that doesn't work if Reaper doesn't have focus. Best is to have an analog volume/mute on your desk. That's what I have (Presonus Mix Station) but there are likely less expensive options.

To drive this home, there is nothing better than a physical "oh shit knob" that you can grab instantly. I'll never go back.

Fex, that's just what I need. Karbomusic, I hear that. I want to keep it simple for now, but the outboard solution is best.
Thanks to all.
