>> v4: Prerelease/Beta overview
REAPER 4.0 is now in the alpha/beta stage. Anyone who is interested can download the latest prerelease version of REAPER 4.0 from here: http://www.landoleet.org/ Please respect the rules listed at the top of the download page.
Added for emphasis: Prerelease software should be expected to have bugs. The purpose of a public alpha/beta/RC process is to help identify bugs in a real-world context. The software is not an advance copy of REAPER 4! Prerelease builds will contain experiments, tests, and lots of new code. If you come across a bug, please report it along with a recipe to reproduce.
On Windows, the prerelease installer includes a checkbox for “portable install.” If you check the box, and install the prerelease version into its own directory, then all user preferences and settings will be kept separate from your existing REAPER 3.x settings. On Mac, you can create a portable install by dragging REAPER.app from the installer DMG to its own folder, and creating a new, empty file in that folder named “reaper.ini”.
Features will be added and changed often throughout the prerelease stage, and prerelease builds may have buggy or unexpected behavior. The purpose of the prerelease stage is to get as much user feedback as possible, in order to guide the development of new features, and identify bugs. The prerelease stage is the middle of the development process, not the end of it.
To try to organize user feedback, we have started a number of topics in this forum for some of the specific new features, with topic titles like “v4: Take lane alignment.” If you have any feedback, bug reports, or suggestions about specific 4.0 features, please use the relevant topic, or the “v4: Everything else” topic.
v4 topics:
Flexible interface engine (WALTER)
Take lane alignment
Comping takes
Project Media/FX Bay
Media Explorer time selection
Media Item Properties dialog
Mouse Modifiers
Area selection and editing changes
Multichannel improvements
Track stereo width, improved panning modes
ReaSurround
Input FX chains
Everything else includes the full whatsnew changelog.

OMG!!! Thank you so much!!! X-Mas came early this year. : )
So when you install V4 a box comes up that automatically uninstalls Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic etc. and then another box opens after that up that says "You're Welcome!!!". Nice feature! : )

I believe that I may have inadvertently soiled myself. But that squishy feeling in my undergarments will have to endure until at least I have installed Reaper 4 and played with if for about 10 hours.
My cat is looking at me in an odd way, testing the air. Patience, little one...

Looking good! I've always been critical of Reaper, even as a user. But this looks like it will be a great update. Going to download now! Thanks for the work so far.

Damn, I really wish I didn't have to go to work right now, but it's probably better it came out this morning otherwise, I wouldn't have slept!
Thanks guys!

Yay Big congratulations from chilly UK!! Now it really does feel like xmas is coming early this year!
R4 changelog looks great - I can hardly wait to start playing. I'm now torn between meeting an obligation and blowing it out to play with R4
As a first observation, it would be nice if some of the other really small FR's (where it's trivial programming) could make it into R4 as well. There are plenty of these, but for instance one of mine is zoom-dependent Ctrl+right/left behaviour for forward/backward that's appropriate at whatever zoom level. I'm not looking so much to plug my pet FR, but it strikes me that there are plenty of FR's / nitpicks that constitute minor programming that could really give R4 the polish it deserves during this major development phase.
Exciting times - keep up the good work!!!
z.

This is very nice! Love it.
Installed in a new sub directory - saved my reamenus and then went with the new default 4.0 menus. I really like how cleaned up the menus are! Great job! The overall look of the GUI is clean and easy to figure out.
I need to sort through the issue of keeping the reamenus to still appear for 3.7+.
Do we install the latest SWS extensions or wait? For now, I'm waiting.
Again, this is a great looking and powerful DAW you guys have.
Thank You!

Can't install to "C:\Program Files (x86)", must be a permissions/UAC thing.

EEEK..
Many thanks to cockos for including us bums in shaping things for V4!
need to delve deeper before i give feedback, but direction seems good..
2 things that have passed my little brain in the short time:
Automation? << any love ?
elastic audio/warp type features? << ?
FX browser polishing also comes to mind.
anyways i appreciate its alpha 1 but just asking if there is consideration .
many thanks - [back to play]

Don't like the new look, changed back to version 3.00 theme.
Hope a better theme come out soon. The track colours look drab in the TCP.
Don't think I'll get used to it.
Don't get me wrong. There's a lot of great stuff here, but I'll stick with White Tie 3.0.

Going to be an interesting weekend. Lots to discover.

Thank you guys!
Clearly a lot of work has been put into it. I like a lot of the new UI stuff. And many interesting improvements, some gems hidden in the "medium-small" stuff.
I was hoping for some major MIDI/arranging improvements but they're sadly still not with us. And some other lesser stuff like multi-channel meters, left/right dockers, track inspector etc... I was expecting to see early on.
What I do hope, is for the major new stuff that IS implemented, to work great and break new ground. And not require too much bug-fixing so that more time is spent on even more new stuff
The next couple of months are about to get very interesting, thanks again Cockos!

Sounds like a very nice update.
However, after Justin mentioned he has Reaper running on Linux, I really expected a Linux version to be (one of) the big news for Reaper 4. Thus, I am a bit disappointed. It would have been a reasonable step also.

observation: track monitor button is a little confusing. i know red means stop/off/etc., but maybe the monitor on state should be green , or the monitor button should be x'ed some how.

YES.
i was trying to use the virt midi keyboard and didn't know if i was monitoring or not, red = not monitoring and 'nothing' = monitoring. topsy turvy!!
some other colour such as green would help.
the monitor button is also now quite a distance from the ARM button. they are kind of brothers/sisters/cousins so should be close i think as they have been in the past... no cousin gags please
think of new users trying to play a synth who haven't 'inserted virtual instrument' .... nightmare!!!

Won't install at all.
"Error opening file for writing
C:\Program Files (x86)\REAPER4\reaper.exe
Click Abort to stop the installation,
retry to try again, or
Ignore to skip this file"
On Windows 7 Home Edition
I am the administrator of the machine, and it's the only log-in I have. I have no problem installing other software, so it can only be a problem with REAPER. I see someone else has had the same problem.
I'm using the reaper04alpha2-install.exe
