Last month user kgarello won for the first time and he decided to choose a good sounding rock song with some juicy grooves. Who's going to win this month? I don't know, but let me tell you something: this competition is on fire and the top5 is constantly changing, so if you still want to show us what you got, now is the time to do it!
Band: Big Head Todd and the Monsters
Song: Hey Delilah
As always you can download the multitrack from the website or clicking on this link.
Over the weekend I went through hardware troubleshooting hell, which resulted in software / driver environment hell. (broke it so bad I could not fix it, this is hard to do) Fresh install, all is well, and a mix contest seems like a perfect way to stress test the system. I'm throwing my hat back in the ring
(As soon as I get out of Windows update Purgatory )
1 more day...I'm trying to get a submission ready but my work schedule has been pushing me around. I'll have time next week so will at least be able to listen and get comments together.
For whatever reason I cannot het the full length .flac files to load up. they are all only 3:17 long when I try to load by clicking on the supplied .rpp file.
I check the file size after I extracted the .zip to Submissions folder and they all look like proper file size after extraction.
When I started reaper by using the provided .rpp file a little window pops up and says:
There were 1 items in the project that were saved by extensions. If you save this project without those extensions installed, you may lose those extensions' data.
Project tokens not recognized:
SWSAUTOCOLOR
****I'll try an just build a session from just the .flac files
That did the trick... I can get on with some listening and rockin!

SUBMISSIONS.rpp worked fine for me. In first view that opened, those track items were shortened for some reason, but one can stretch them to right length.
Pretty good mixes. First I thought that it’s impossible for me to find winners within reasonable time, but when I started to listen the long drum intro, it was quite easy to filter out problematic mixes.
streamed the mixes from the website - I guess those are mp3's, or?
had a real hard time figuring out which mix is mine, which I think is a good thing. this one feels tough to judge, so just went on my first impressions here.

I too thought I might have a tough time finding mine. I was getting worried when I heard "mine" and then started to wonder if it was mine during the chorus. crazy. Once I went on to a couple other mixes there was no doubt which one was mine.
As far a judging a Best Mix? I'm discovering it's kind of subjective with an experience modifier perhaps? I mean - am I listening for what sounds the most radio ready? Album ready? One that sounds best on my stereo? a song that takes risks and pulls it off? Most original?
All of the above?
Do I use comparative analysis against a professionally produced piece from a similar genre, or against my own mix, all of the mixes collectively?
It's a great listening exercise, and it's also rare, for most people (not involded in music production) to be able to listen to 14 different mixes of the same song.
I'd love to hear 20 mixes of the same Tool song.

I'm a huge fan of Big Head Todd, and being that this is a live take, I just gravitated to the mixes that put them in that space - cause I just simply wanted to be there in that small venue watching them play. All of the mixes, of course felt very live, but some choices felt more appropriate for a mix from a larger venue, and that all lost a lot of intimacy for me, which I didn't really dig. Generally I would be more excited by risky mix decisions, but here I just appreciated the mixes that kept it pretty simple.
Just about every mix had some element that I thought the participant nailed - but no mix, not even my own listening back a week later, pulled it all together.
I should wait here, I guess, before going into more detail, wouldn't want to influence anyone else's thoughts too much.

I dig what you're saying. It's about reference.
I definitely found a couple things I didn't think of after a week has gone by and then some fresh ears + everyones elses take on the song.
I feel the same about my mix..nailed it on a couple things, but I think I might have dropped the ball a bit on others.
My plan was make it what I would have wanted to hear were I standing up close and watching them jam. Hopefully I achieved a little bit of that.
The "judges" will tell... :::: insert Perry Mason theme here:::::

yeah... Must be rough hobnobbing your way around Europe, hanging in Italy for bit. Maybe quick stop in Monaco? Ahh the Life Of the Contest Administrator. Luxury and Jet-setting.
Seriously though, no probs. I have it working just fine.
Peace!

because I've joined IK Multimedia's affiliate program and I'm trying to get some money Lol
I appreciate your hard work, and I understand the money part for sure, but *not* seeing stuff like that here is one of the reasons I enjoy this forum. Hope it doesn't sound terse but there is a reason we never see flashing banner ads here. Now, everytime I click on this thread some of my browser info gets sent to IK and my existence here is none of their business.

Firefox ( or one of its family) can put the kibosh on all that.. just trying to be helpful. You might know all this already.
Peace

Thanks for the help, appreciate. I ^do but believe I shouldn't have to protect myself from vendor ads on this forum. If it were something like a "please support me on Patreon/PayPal" sig with a link, that would be totally fine (I've donated to multiple scripters etc over the years for example), just don't like the blatant/flashing adverts from IK etc. and would subsequently avoid such threads much less click or donate based on them.

I too will happily contribute to a Patreon account if it means ensuring that this awesome Mixing Contest is able to continue and grow. For me personally this is a great learning experience. It's my equivalent of saying "dude, I'll sweep the floors and take out garbage to just be here and learn."
votes cast...

I really appreciate that, but the thing is at the moment I don’t really need any money to continue running this contest. Of course I could pay for a proper website domain or for a google drive premium subscription but I don’t really need anything. I’ve set up this contest from the beginning in a way that doesn’t require me to put any money in it.
For that reason I think a patreon is a bit too much at the moment. A donation link would fit better. But again I really appreciate seeing people responding positively to a project that’s been taking me a lot of time in the past 2 years and that gives me no profit
