Default Switch from PC to Mac

Thinking of upgrading my computer and switching from PC to Mac. Any issues with that? I don't want to lose any of my current projects or recordings. Thanks!

I am positive that Reaper itself will not show any problems on that behalf.

The new M1 ("Apple silicon") Macs seem very interesting regarding performance / price and performance / power consumption ratio. Also Apple seems to promise a great future for that product line (M1X, M2, ....)

Hence (IMHO other than Intel Macs) this seems like a decent move.

Of course (AFAIK), Reaper does have a native M1 version (still beta right now) and no old project loading or licensing problems whatsoever.

OTOH, I feel that this might only be perfect, if all plugins used in the projects feature native (non-Rosetta) M1 (i.e. ARM CPU) versions. AFAIK, this is not yet really common in the industry.

E.g.: No Native Instruments plugins are native ARM right now. They provide list of what products are compatible via Rosetta. Kontakt is not mentioned there .

Moreover of course you need appropriate (e.g. approved MAC-M1) drivers for any hardware you use.

So I will wait some time before considering to buy new hardware.

It's all good since you are using VSTs on windows which you'll have on the mac as well.

Macbook Air M1 here, runs perfectly fine, RME interface drivers rocksolid and and the CPU performance is exorbitant great.

No need to worry about any rosetta native M1 stuff.
If it is possible to install and get working it will work.

you should ask for specific plugin to get feedback for it.
The big plugin makers Izotope and Fabfilter are ready to go.

I love this little silent M1 Toy !
Let me also point out that the internal loudspeakers delivers a surprisingly good image, I can mix a song in the bed without any interface, just listening on the little speakers.

Sticking with the last of the genuine Steve Jobs Macs is still an option. OSX 10.13.6 is a solid option for OS. I think the overall reaction to switching from Windows to Mac is still happiness and light even with the post-Jobs stuff. As a long time Mac user though, the post-Jobs offerings aren't very Apple-like.

Reaper is happiness and light no matter what you do!

Avoid 10.15 (Catalina) no matter what. The last version of OS XI Big Sur allegedly fixes the brick bug. I'd be cautious and vet whatever comes next carefully. 10.13.6 on a Jobs-era Intel i7 will run absolutely anything and everything.

Thanks to one and all for your time and info. The question was asked about plugins, really the only ones I use are all EZ drummer, EZ bass, EZ mix, all toontrack products. Let me know if anyone thinks those will have issues. Cheers.

Easily the best and cheapest mac I've bought (out of 4). I built a custom PC in April 2020, and bought the Mac mini in April 2021. I use them both for my video production. but my M1 Mini is my main machine I spend 10+hrs a day on.

Yeah I don't think so since they are updating the mini with New Apple M1 Chip, Memory boost to 32GB and 64GB and more storage space.
