Goin' 60s
Go go boots, the Watusi and all that. Faking a 60s vibe.
All me except John Luper plays the lead guitar and verby flourishes near the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed that.
The vocal delivery was spot on, and it was chock-full of nice little touches and flourishes.
Great job!

You nailed the 60's sound alright!
Great song. I think the BV's got a bit unclear in all that reverb.

This was one of the "instant songs." I picked up the acoustic and it just came out wo much thinking. I had to hurry and open Reaper before I forgot it. I've learned from not doing that in the past, thinking, "Oh, I'll remember this," but don't and the song's gone forever.

More accurate would be, they got lost in all the delay. The only actual verb is the panned plate on the left rhythm guitar. I got carried away...again.

Sounds and feels great, got that big room sound spot on.
Im surprised there's no verb. Edit] It's as you say actually delay and only on the vocals,
and verb on some of the left panned guitar parts, gives a big room sound with good clarity.

That's exactly why I prefer delays, mainly using Nembrini's free delay on this. It can still be overdone, but I think they're cleaner with the right combo of feedback and mix with the source. I only used actual verb on my guitar on the left. The keys and drums have neither.

Jeez, my brain immediately imagines one of those weird Peter Sellers movies with this playing in the background. Very 1960's sound. It's amazing how a stylistic "sound" creates such a vivid vibe.

I think you nailed it. Nice touch with the piano, comes in at the right point and does its thing. Good vocal work as always. Do you compose those back-up call and response stuff right from the start, or do you bring them in when you begin arranging?

I enjoyed that very much. Excellent work! A very strong "Yardbirds with Jeff Beck" vibe, but with Knopfler playing the solo. Very cool.
I do have a couple notes, if you're open, but keep in mind it's just one man's opinion:
a. I think the snare's a bit too fat and solid. It's not make or break, but I think if you allowed a bit more snare wire in and brought up the "crack," you'd be closer to the Animals/Yardbirds/Buffalo Springfield thing.
b. I wonder what it would sound like with some chamber verb, just for fun. Keep the delay, it sounds great, but I think you might get a bit more era-appropriate atmosphere with a touch of chamber. I'm thinking "Heart Full of Soul" here.
c. I also wonder how a tone bender fuzz guitar solo would sound. Heck, I'd even track a fuzz solo for you, if you were interested. If you're happy with it as-is, you won't get any argument here. I just like to play around with stuff.
d. Does the energy lag a bit around the solo? Am I hearing things? I'd want to bump the band's volume a bit there just to get a whole "freak out" thing happening.
That's it. Again, excellent work. I love 60s music of all sorts and you really caught the vibe of those records. Thanks for sharing!

Wow. Every one of those were great suggestions. I couldn't do much about C because I asked a friend for a favor, so I took what he gave me with no complaints. But to be honest, a more fuzzy sound was what I was hoping for. I love John's lead, but I thought it was just a tad too "classy" for the song. Would you mind doing a fuzz lead? I'd incorporate your other suggestions for an alternate version.
Also, any suggestions on how to enhance the solo section? I intentionally toned things down so the lead would get the spotlight, but it was no good if it took away from the overall energy.

I'm really glad my suggestions helped. I tried to be as constructive as possible.
I would be honoured to play a fuzzy/Cream style solo for this. I'll PM you my details and we can talk/share files.
For the record, I would use some automation to bring up the band to meet the soloist. I'd have to sit with the mix for a bit to be more specific.
EDIT: Why didn't I think of this sooner? I think an organ (Farfisa, Vox Continental, or B3) part would really fill in a lot of the spaces and would give you something to crank up during the guitar solo.

The organ is Blue3 vsti. I'll try adding a simpler section this weekend. Thx.

Good one Sammy, sounds very much like the 60s, I know because I come from that era.
Also reminds me very much of the young bands I recorded in my studio throughout the 70s.
In regards to comments, I might echo Kirk concerning the lead guitar. Right now it's a little crip and cutting, lacking some of the lower frequencies (possibly around 200 to 700hrz) to round it out a little better. Ha ha, just being a little nit picky.
Good job though Sammy.

Not picky at all. You should have heard it before I tried fattening it up (it wasn't DI, so I didn't amp it or anything). Looks like I could have gone even further, but it would basically be trying to put frequencies in place that didn't exist on the original sound. The quality of John's playing shined through, but the lead tone was *extremely* bright and lacking low end. I think he was just trying to go with the "era."

I think that bass guitar needs to be smashed into submission so that it actually fits the relative dynamic of the piece. It could probably be played a little better, but it really does kind of jump around. That big wonky slide around :30 is pretty cool, but it almost sounds like it's a part of another recording. From that point, it sounds like the bass is just altogether too loud for the next minute or so. Then it's just literally all over for the rest of the song. I certainly dig what you're shooting for there, but it's just not really getting it.
Honestly, I think that bass needs pushed back into the space a bit more, too. It's like the bass amp is right in front of me and the rest of the band is across the room through the PA with a bunch of FX.

Thanks man. I'll try taming that bass this weekend. Maybe that will make help the whole sound a little less disastrous.

Revisited
I added Kirk's lead and did a few other tweaks based on suggestions. Any better?
I THINK I tamed the bass, added an overall chamber verb, added a low organ during the lead, and other smaller stuff.

For me, I prefer the first version.
The bass was really driving it before, and now it sounds a little lacklustre, lacking energy. I love the vocal delivery, but I think it only works if it's buried a little bit.
While technically you've got a balance that makes the parts generally clearer in the new version, I find that it has lost some oomph.
I like the idea of a fuzz solo, but the first solo had more of a melodic journey to it, and I think musically served the song better.
That low organ is a nice touch though.

Hey Judders. Gotta find that balance between going by my own instincts and by the suggestion of other ears, even if a bit exaggerated. Mix-wise, I do prefer elements of the first version myself, but I do try to stay open to improvements too.

Not in the least man. You had nothing to do with the mix, and as for the lead, I really like both for different reasons--not "just saying that." I can say yours was a LOT easier to fit in. It took hardly any time at all. I'm saving both versions of the project.

Not at all. People post music here to hear other opinions and try stuff out, right? It's a learning process for all of us and whenever you hear one opinion, you can be sure that there are plenty of people with the opposite opinion out there!

It's subtle and it's the mix, not the ingredients.

Holy moly I want Quentin Tarantino to use this song in another kill bill or reservoir dogs type movie.like right at the end while the protagonist is walking into the sunset over dead bodies. No joke though this is really good in every aspect man. Composition, mixing and performance all top notch. You're voice reminds me of Steve miller a bit, very nice to listen to. Bravo dood!

I suppose that I am late to the party...but I am going comment anyway, because I like this tune a lot. Great melody on this one - the most important thing about any song to me. Great lead vocal and flawless harmony. I really like the little keyboard part. Is that you playing? If so you should do more. I kept thinking about how some slow spin Leslie from a Hammond B-3 could fill some of space in the more instrumentally sparse parts of the track. Do you know any good organists down there in Hotlanta?

Thanks T. I WISH I could play like that. It's a pieced-together midi file driven by Blue3 vsti.
Ironically, I'm not much into the music scene here these days.

This is very impressive. There is so much going on and everything sounds so good and right. I'm only listening on tiny little speakers and there is so much depth and width in the mix. It really has a 3d sound. The song is catchy too. Well done!

Thanks man. This song probably has more verb (mostly delays) and any other song I've posted. I was thinking about the era.
