A drum machine that sounds like a drum machine?
Can someone recommend me a good drum machine that sounds really like a drum machine?
Think Sisters of Mercy. I think they used Boss DR-55 as well as Rolands TR-808 and 909, if I'm not mistaken.
Are there any VST's out there that can generate similar sounds?

Yep, AudioRealism Drum Machine does them pretty good (the Boss is just a bunch of samples). D16 Group's Drumazon / Nepheton are nice too, a bit more options. I like to use all of them.

You could check Drumaxx.

You can also get something like Shortcircuit and download sample packs from different drum machines. Not the same, but it provides more flexibility (which is better or worse, depending on what you want).

Yeah, just use a sampler and there are plenty of drum machine samples.
To sound like a certain band, you probably will eq each drum part quite a bit, as well as adding some reverb and other fx. Also the pitch of each drum part.
Drumatic is a great free vst which can make these basic sounds also.
Eq and other fx on drum machines are differnt than mixing acoustic drums. I think, can just really experiment with it.

Consider sequencing them like proper old drum machines as well for that static, stiff feel.

Many of the "classic" drum machine sounds can be recreated using subtractive synthesizers. E.g. u-he ACE and Zebra are great at drum sounds.
Some great specialized drum plugins (which go beyond the classic drum machines) are
Drumaxx, Tremor, µTonic or even Chromaphone (the latter especially for percussion/melodic percussion).
Regarding samples, the Goldbaby stuff mentioned before is great and I can highly recommend the Reel Machines AdPak for Addictive Drums. Also, http://samples.kb6.de/downloads.php offers a lot of drum machine samples.

I own most of those too, and could absolutely recommend some of them if the OP asked for something more general. But for 808/909 emulation, imho *none* of them come even close to the ones I mentioned.

actually you are looking for the right samples....any sampler/drum sampler/drum machine vst could play it then
for 100 % authencitiy i suggest sampling and splicing tghe kick and snare from sister of mercy's floodlands...why that particluar album ? beacuse it has th best production fo the lot, and a number of places where the only thing playing is the drum machine...it will take you all of 5 minutes to sample and splice and set your own drum kit (good thing = no velocity layers).....then its fun all the way (shorten the tail...add reverb...reverse etc : endless possibilities)
i was transfixed when i heard that snare sound...coupled with eldritch 's vocals it was an epiphany

Afaik, Sisters of Mercy used to use a Dr-55 indeed.
Tr-808 and tr-909 were mostly used by electro artists, but the dr-55 had a wider audience in rock and cold wave bands (The Cure, Berurier Noir, etc).
You can check on my drumsample website, there is pack featuring the dr-55.
You can download a free sample of the pack, and listen to several audio demos :
http://waveshaper.12r.org/
As suggested above, several softsynths will make you able to achieve these kinds of sounds, but it might take you a while to program the proper settings.
And Drummaxx or µ-TOnic might not give you from scratch that 80's sound you seem to be after : many vst drumsynths are more designed for "modern" sounds (even if modern sounds make an extensive use of 808 etc. When i say "modern" i am thinking "loudness" and "sharp transients"). Both are excellent drumsynths, btw.
But if you want quickly "the real sound", i woud suggest to use a softsampler

Yikes, this thread grew faster than I could keep track of!
A thousand thanks for all the replies. I think that samples are the way to go. But I did found a VST that I think emulates the 808 (Drumatic).
Suleiman: great idea actually to use the original. I guess static is good, since thats the sound Im after.
Sinkmusic: definately an option!
If I continue making music, I now know what to look for.
