Default Project Backup Files (Limit)

Summary: Provide an option in Preferences to limit the number of automatically saved project backups ( .rpp-bak files )

Reason: Time-stamped project backups are an excellent feature. But after working on a project for a couple of weeks or more, there may be hundreds (depending on save-frequency) of these files.

Benefit: I like to have fairly compact and tidy project directories. Providing a configurable backup limit (say 5 or 10 files) would still allow me to recover recent previous editing states, without the need for manual file maintenance.

Default FR Update

How can I find out if the development team have accepted this Feature Request for future implementation, or whether it has been rejected ?

Or maybe I can't find out :-)

Thanks for any advice.

Good idea to have this option to set user limit for auto backups when saving.

This issue has come up for me too. I routinely delete several Gigabytes of RPP-BAK files every day. This stuff is controlled via Project Saving section in Preferences/Project.

The "Keep multiple versions" checkbox and the "Ever x minutes" parameter are the usual culprits.

But we cannot control the number of backups Reaper should make, so +1 for doing something about massive backup files.

For example, they're not compressed. Even compression-level 1 ZIP files would crunch this stuff to a fraction, and it's likely not too hard to manage. I set my backup frequency to "Every 3 minutes when stopped". My i7 can probably handle this. *.rpp-bak-zip

The user could set a size limit in megabytes. Reaper could warn the user, taking only backups of the past d number of days in to account, and offer to
  1. Clean up x% of the backups in the project files directory no older than y number of days
  2. Keep x% of the backup files, saved at similar intervalls. 100 backups, x=10%, keep 10 backups between the first save date and time of the current project file and the current save and time.

I'm sure there are lots of other clever strategies.

My sessions are usually 2-3MB to start with. Some end up in the 50 MB range, so files go big fast. I've gotten used to it, but it is a nuisance that could be handled more effectively.

+ 1 (at least an option to be able to have 1 only backup file, instead of infinite as it is now) ... i struggle with this every time, .. my hard disk is very limited .. sucks so much

Yep, this change/addition would be really appreciated.

Perhaps in Reaper v6.00 ?

Please ?

In addition, it would be helpful to be able to put the backups in their own folder when auto-saving to the project folder. Right now the main project folder for Reaper is a mess, limiting the maximum number and designating a folder inside the project would help a ton with busy sessions.

Definitely yes. If possible, limit by the number of files and/or file date (older than x days).

This is the reason I have turned off backups, which isn't exactly ideal. I'd also like a limit on auto-saves.

No need to stop backups. Put my utility in windows scheduler to run every 2 weeks or so and just keep the newest.

+1 Being able to do this within Reaper is much needed. On my system, files written to disk are immediately backed up to my NAS so I have to do clean up on the local drive and the backup. It gets pretty old when you have auto-save set to every 5 minutes.

Sometimes I forget...32GB accrued in 4 months.

Only time I need them is directly after a crash. Reaper should offer to load the file I was working on that case as well.

I guess a script could be written to replace the natie save function by "save AND keep only X last backups" but I definitely thing it woul dbe better native, cause it is having 100s of saves which is overkill. Script aims to make reaper more powerful, not less, in general :P

Thanks to everyone for their interest and support of this feature request.

Reaper Devs: if you are reading this forum, please could you respond with your opinion on whether this valuable enhancement is likely to be implemented as a native addition to the current backup function. Cheers. :-)

That doesn't really happen, unfortunately. You'll have to just sit in the dark and wait like the rest of us. It's been requested for many years though already so don't hold your breath.

Much easier solution is to just make a folder shortcut and empty it regularly.

cant say i blame them. i wouldn't either. imagine catering to the expectation that every individual user expects the 2 devs to respond to every concern and defend every decision. just look at how much time White Tie wasted trying to explain the decision behind te lack of engagement. the current level is already far more than any other daw...

You make it sound so complicated. It's really not that hard to come in and say hey this backup thing is a good idea but it's not our priority and it might take a year before we get to it or hey we're really not interested in this and for these reasons. They can end the discussion anytime they want by saying we will not discuss this further. It's really not as complicated as you say. white tie is his own thing and I'm not going to discuss him.

Not complicated. Time consuming. Annoying. A waste of time valuable dev time. As soon as you begin to engage, you create an expectation.

We know they're aware of things like this because they do engage and respond from time to time and we know they don't feel obligated to explain every aspect of how and why they spend their time every time someone makes a post about it because they never do.

I can easily accept that now after 10 years (wasn't always the case, haha), but I would be the same way I suppose.

Sounds to me like they prefer to be driven by genuine desire and not by the demands of customers. They have never intentionally created any expectation to the contrary.

Just sounds like they like freedom. Which is what I want. Which is why I use Reaper. Just sayin, it makes sense to me and I think it's something we have to accept.

I disagree that engaging customers in civil discussions is a waste of time. This has nothing to do with freedom. It's clear that they make Reaper for more than themselves.
