Default A little help (Hi-Hat & Ride)

I've got these ride and hi-hat samples that I would like to make available to the Reaper community. My problem is that at my age my hearing is not so good anymore and I've processed them rather heavily.

The neat thing about these samples is that there is a lot of dynamic range in them that is hard to find in many other drum libraries, even some of the more expensive ones. This was accomplished by having 24 layers per group, there are two groups. In Kontakt I have the groups programmed with Round Robins. Unfortunately RRs don't exist in most of the free samplers, however they can easily be programs as Left & Right hand samples.

So please take a listen and tell me what you think. There's nothing fancy in the way they are programmed, the Hi-Hat is a straight ahead 16th and the Ride is just a basic triplet.

Hi-Hat..

Ride..

So do you think you could use something like this? Please be honest and don't be afraid to say it sucks. I'd rather know that before I take the time to get them ready to go. I should mention the Hi-Hats are less than 4MB but the Ride is pushing 75MB.

Ugh, heh heh, it's the craps to get old..

Well then, I better get busy.

Edit: For those of you that have Kontakt, which version do you have?

I still have Kontakt 2 which would pretty much cover the bases but I'm not sure the scripts I wrote for them will work in K2.

Hi Ivan, can you tell me exactly which K4 update version you have. My version is 4.2.2.4504. It's not the latest, I held back a little just for the purpose of hopefully being able to accommodate more folks with any instruments I make.

Thanks SMM, I'm not sure what cymbals were used for this. It was a project a fellow Reaperite (victoriousmusic) and I put together a few years ago. At the time somebody made a post about getting Reaper folks together and make a drum library.

victoriousmusic had the drums and did the recording while I did the cutting, editing, mangling and programed them into Kontakt.

I've been using them ever since, especially the hats and ride because they had better dynamics then anything else I had. The processing I use on them has been rather evolutionary.

Okay, the nki files I provide will have scripts, I'm not sure how that works out with the Player.

I've had some interruptions but I'm still at it and should hopefully have something soon.

I'm sorry, it's taking a lot longer than I figured. The reason being is that I've been really working on the Ride in Kontakt. I've got it scripted so that what I call Added Attack can be added to the samples. I think this will make a huge difference in getting the most out of the samples.

I've got it set up so that you can either just set up the Attacks to play at a certain Attack or you can actually Program them for different attacks in the Midi Editor.

Below are two mp3s of the same exact midi track, the first one is the straight samples with no attack added. The second has the attack programmed.

Regular VmRide, Regular Attack..

VmRide with Programmed Attack..

Let me know what you think...

Also Here's an mp3 of my VmHiHats programmed in ReaSamplOmatic.

I thought they turned out pretty good.

Pretty good?? I'd say VERY good!

I notice you've used reasamplomatic as well?
most of the time I use shortcircuit, (can't afford full kontakt!)
so if you could do em to suit that sort of thing as well I'd be EVER so grateful!

seriously thanks TOD

Hi jiff 41 and thank you.

I did a little programming with shortcircuit a few years ago and although almost everything was doable, it was rather difficult.

But that don't mean you or somebody else can't do it. Although my main focus is on Kontakt, the samples will be available and easily accessed by anyone for any other sampler they choose.

With the new improvements to ReaSamplOmatic it's pretty easy to program and can be set up to function much like Kontakt.

Yes, I encourage you to jump in. I don't know if you've programmed shortcircuit before, I found it cumbersome and time consuming, but it was quite flexible, it's too bad they didn't perfect it a little more.

TX16Wx has some promise but it's not even close yet for doing multi level drum samples.

On the other hand, I think ReaSamplOmatic has just shot ahead for the sampler of choice for the freebie drum samplers. It's pretty easy to program and once you get past it's shortcomings, which can be overcome fairly easy, it's very flexible.

-----------------

On another note, I've got a question about Ride cymbal placement.

Which note do most of you want the Ride and Bell Ride on?

I'm going to use the standard placement for the Hi-Hat but the Ride is a little more fluent in it's placement among the various sample libraries.

I will provide instructions for changing the placement in Kontakt but it will include not only placing them in the Mapping Editor, you'll also have to make a slight change in the script.

Ooh, these sound really good .
The only thing I notice is the release of the open HiHat - when it gets choked off by the closed HiHat in your ReaSamplomatic example - is not quite on par with the level of quality. I do love the pedal chick samples (and would probably smuggle in a low velocity sample of that sound when the HiHat shall close in a more exposed situation ).

As of the ride, I'd say go with GM standard (as the HiHat is apparently GM already), Ride would be D#3, note 51 and the Bell F3, note 53.

Can't wait to get my fingers dirty with your samples, it's all so perfectly in time with the upcoming ReaSamplomatic goodies.

Aah gofer, just the guy I want to ask a question. But first let me explain about the Hi-Hats. This was a quick thing I did with RSO just to show that it can be done with the new RSO upgrades. I didn't use Justins choke on them I just went with the "Note Length" and Release. I'm sure you can make them sound better.

Quote:

Okay, that's where I'll put them, thankyou.

Now for my question, is there a way to control the Release in RSO with a CC-Controller? Actually I would like to be able to assign CC-Controllers to all of RSOs controls?

Quote:

Actually these new upgrades to RSO also have something to do with me taking a little more time.

However, the main thing that's taking some time is that I've been adding the means to add attack to the Ride. It works pretty well and if there's a way to control the RSO controls with CC controllers, then it might be possible to do the same with RSO.

It basically involves controlling the Main Volume, Sustain, and Decay. It's a pretty slick way of adding attack to an instrument that isn't there.

I think you mean D#2 amd F2 don't you gofer. That's what 51 and 53 are in Kontakt.

Darn octave numbers Those directly above the hihats.

No direct MIDI control for Rea-plugins yet, afaik . Only solution I know of is with Jeffos' "MIDI to ReaControl path" plugin.

That should be good ivan. I've purposely not upgraded my K4 dll file to the latest just for this reason, being able to share nki files with others.

The version I used is 4.2.2.4504.

Just here to tell you, this project is not dead, I'm just waiting for the new ReaSamplOmatic500 (RSK5) to be officially released.

I might add, besides some of my own drums I've also got Analogue Drums Big Mono programmed in RSK5 and I think it's sounding pretty good.

Here's a little mp3 using RSK5 to kind of show how they're sounding.

https://db.tt/ETOLkRig

I've also got it all programed in Kontakt.

Right now I'm just waiting for the official release of RSK5 in the upcoming latest Reaper release.

I think this will be great for those just starting out and don't have alternatives, or even just anyone who don't have Kontakt.

Not only do you look like santa claus, you're acting like him!
this is great news all round, I already got big mono, but I must say that my programming needs some working on if I'm going to get it as good as yours(nicely done!)

So there's a new RSK5 on the way? (more updates, it will be a good xmas!)

Great.

curious: Did you do the MIDI programming by hand or via some sort of edrums or similar ?

Thanks jiff, heh heh, well I do have a white beard but no fancy red clothes and the closest thing to a reindeer is a 13 yer old cat.

One thing about Big Mono, I'm not sure when the latest version came out, I'd downloaded it a few years ago. However, I recently downloaded it again and found it has more samples than the previous one.

The snare now has two sets of 24 layers each that I put in Round Robins in RSK5 and I think is one of the most dynamic snares I have, plus it don't sound bad either.

Hi nofish, and thanks.

I always play them in from my keyboard to get the basic feel but then manually edit them until I'm happy with them.
