Default MIDI Recording Help in the New Betas

Does anybody know how to make the midi notes record blank space even when notes aren't being input?

One of the Reaper 3 beta's changed this from the old behavior. For example, say I push record on a "midi" track with "record with midi overdub" on, and press a few midi keys at the 1st bar, then a few more around the 6th bar then stop the recording at bar #9.

The current behavior will only show the MIDI item to be 6 bars long. I want it to show the 6 that contain MIDI data, and the 3 bars of blank space at the end so I can cut the tail off at 8 and duplicate this 8 to make a 16. The current behavior makes me have to drag the end of the MIDI item to 8 bars, which is very annoying. Can anybody help me with this one?

- Do the same thing, but r-click the rec button and select "Record mode: Time selection auto punch" or

- Leave the normal rec mode, but hit R to record in a loop, when the loop wraps around, the item becomes "full" or

- Insert an empty MIDI item before recording

OK thanks, that helped. It only works when I have loop recording setup, but that's good enough since i'm almost always in loop mode.
