Default [Prog] Mixing a dynamic song "Materia Obscura"

This is the only song of our upcoming album which might not be hard to get a master with under -14 LUFS.

But regarding the arrangement that is supposed to build up, it was a new thing for me to mix. Usually, the guitars and drums are pretty full-on with the occasional break or silence but this one was different.

Any opinions? Do you think it is dynamic enough or would you like the build-up to be even more evident?

Hi!

Thanks for sharing your song, I'm digging it a lot. You can tell it was played by people and I love that. Slight tempo variation adds that human touch. I like that bar of 3/4 in the first (tremolo'd) guitar break, it keeps your ear on it's toes. The first part has a real The Who sound, the singing and reverb on the vocals harken to See Me, Feel Me. And then it becomes very not The Who lol.

The mix sounds good to me. Comments would be that everything is very forward sounding, all of the instruments may not be forward in the mix but there's no sort of depth to the whole thing. I'm terrible at recording and mixing dirty guitars so I applaud the great job you've done with that. Give them some depth somehow (I know that's not very helpful advice). The build builds fine. Your album is going to sound great. Good job!

Hey Frazer,

thanks for giving it a listen! The 3/4 you heard appear every now and again during the intro, but I am glad that they are not too obvious. Actually I think it is a 7/8 if you want to be precise, haha.

I have never heard "See Me, Feel Me" before. What a great song! I wish I would be able to create such nice reverbs and depths. It is really the hardest part for me. The depth that most of the commercial mixes have is still something impossible to achieve for me. It mus be all the little subtleties combined that give a mix the kind of "openness" and 3D effect that mine are still lacking.

Will definitely post it here once the album is finished.

Rock on!
