Tint media item background changes waveform color

As the title says, the "Tint media item background" option in Preferences changes the color of the waveform peaks. This annoys me greatly!

When I have none of the "background" options checked, the color of the waveforms are the same as the colors of the track, which is what I want. But I also want to have the background of the item be a brighter shade of the same color. How do I get this to work?
