new soundcloud account
Slick production as always. Top notch.
The next step is less slick less perfect.
Less processed, more raw(natural) harmonies.
Your 'perfect' production sounds unnatural kinda.
Please don't misunderstand me, the mix is professional, but the edge is is lost in the process.
You know I love your work.

Thanks Mikael, appreciate your honesty.

I think I hear what you're saying. Perhaps the plight of the modern day musician/mixer/producer/engineer/coffee-boy/record exec/yada,yada,yada...

Too much time to record, mix, etc.

But trust me, if you could have heard the 1500 takes I dumped..

Hope all is well on your end.

Everything is ok. Kinda unfocused. Don't get much done.
Built a new partcaster though.

Cool song! I like the vocal arrangements, and the driving forward momentum of the track. The mix sounds good to me. Anything I would say would be based on personal preference...

eg. The low end in the track feels good, but my preference would be for the bass to "carry" the song a little more assertively. At present the bass feels a little recessed and lacking a defined presence in the mix. Maybe if the kick drum had a little less length on it, and the bass had more low mids and mids, the two might work together better.

Overall though, I like it - Nicely done!

Thanks, and thanks for the feedback.

I decided to try something a little different with my bass on this song. Instead of just reamping the DI, I decided to reamp AND keep the DI. I HP'd the reamp up to around 200hz and LP'd the DI down to about the same. It definitely needs some work...

There's something special I hear in just my DI that I lose when I reamp. My hope was to retain the best of both, but like most things, it's a work-in-progress.

The kick is ringy. In fact, that's the name in kit from Toontrack called EZ!ROCK. I got curious and looked it up:

Ringy
20″ Slingerland* Open
14×20″ Rogers* 1966
A mix of various Neil Dorfsman’s private samples

I noted the "boominess" of it during mixing, so HP'd the kick all the way up to 70, which alleviated a lot of it - but maybe not enough. The kick is prominent around 95-100hz where the bass has some bad mojo, so I let the bass take the low,low-end. I almost always mix the other way around.

Anyway - thanks again.

That's interesting you mention that. In a busy mix, it is sometimes really hard to put your finger on what is going on.

Ringy kicks can be great - I love them, personally (ringy snares too, within reason!).

Usually for me, the decider for the kick tone is dependent on tempo and/or how busy the part is. In any case, I find the more active the kick pattern is, the tighter the kick needs to be. In a big, sparse drum part, there is usually a ton of space for the kick to bloom and dissipate.

Great tune!
