Default imported media items are way too hot.

scratching my head on this one.

imported media items are approx 12dB louder when imported in Reaper.

Imac i5 ( 64bit) , Reaper 6/64bit.
Project is 24/44.1
Items 24/44.1 WAV

I imported the same items in Bitwig and Mutools without this issue.

What is going on here ?

I'd check the following:

1. the track you import them onto isn't turned up or has any routing or plugins on it
2. the vertical zoom is set to default (hold shift+down)
3. check default volume fader gain (Preferences > Project > Track/Send Defaults)
4. check hardware output gain and routing on master track (in the output "send" section)

there's probably at least a few other things, I'm sure others will chime in...

Hi Tom, thanks for the prompt reply

1. the track you import them onto isn't turned up or has any routing or plugins on it.
No , dragged the item in the blank session, fader at 0, no FX
2. the vertical zoom is set to default (hold shift+down).
Does this matter ? set to default.
3. check default volume fader gain (Preferences > Project > Track/Send Defaults)
set at 0.0 dB
4. check hardware output gain and routing on master track (in the output "send" section)
set at 0.0 dB

weird things if you ask me.
My Bitwig and the Mutools ( which I demo just for that purpose ) are acting normal.

so are you saying they are showing as 12db louder than the original file or 12db higher than if you import them into bitwig or mulab? (ie how do you know bitwig & mulab are showing the correct level?)

You drag in several items in one go.
They all end up on different tracks.
When you hit play, all of the items play simultaneously.

Could that be it?

save your reaper file and post it here (just the .rpp file, not the media files), I'll take a quick look

Is your other software turning the imported files down? I remember in FL Studio, the Sampler channel turns down any audio put into it by 12dB. Anything imported as Audio Clip will then be 12dB louder, in comparison.

aaaaarrrrggghhhh. Dammit !
Bitwig imports audio at -10dB ( preferences ), I guess Mutools does the same but I don't see an option for that.
Thanks guys !!
