Reaper often crashes when closing
Any ideas how to avoid this? I always have to restart my computer every time reaper crashes, which is quite a pain.

So exactly what is happening? You shut down reaper and it crashes, or it crashes & you cant just re-start it or it crashes and you have to restart your computer because it crashed too?
This sounds like you may possibly have a system issue here.
Have you tried downloading resplendence.com`s free latency checker & running it?
One thing it is great at is finding problems in both hardware & OS.
Always assuming you are running windows.

There is a VST setting... "Allow complete unload of VST plugins..."
That "might" fix it, if it crashes when you unload a project/close reaper.

It hangs while it's shutting down. Usually if I have multiple tabs it will hang on the last one. Then I have to force close and my drivers won't work anymore.
What sorts of problems does it look for?

This honestly sounds quite promising, since it feels like it's a worse problem when VSTs are present. Reaper says it may present compatibility issues with that box checked. Do you happen to know more specifically what might be the highest risk for compatibility?

Hey man...
I do not but I can say I had to enable this way back in possibly 2012 or earlier, aka a very long time ago and I've never seen any resulting issues - other than my mysterious crashes on some project unloads disappeared. Hope you are doing well!

Oh ok, sweet. Well, so far so good for me too lol. I'm doing well, you? I just discovered a life altering trick to mixing that I wish I had known earlier, so on that front, I'm doing pretty great lol. I understand now why NS10s and things like auratones are so popular. How are you doing?

Doin' fine, gigging a couple times a month and being careful when I do. All are outside or have good ventilation so that's good, otherwise I wouldn't go. It's awful nice getting out of the house and helping people dance, smile, escape and relax at a show.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm real jealous you can do that. It's too cold here for outdoors music. I do miss performing quite a lot.

We'll see what happens on the 12/14 gig, up until now it has been warm but by then they are going to have to give us some heat!

It's almost certainly a plugin causing it, in my experience.
What does Event Viewer say?

I get what you mean... I'm getting the exact same dark, damp weather that you're getting. I'm in Chateauguay.

I predict a massive increase in the sales of outdoor heaters.

I was just telling someone a few weeks ago that's probably a good business to get into!

Even though I am slowly running out of trees, I am glad to say I have enough logs to light an outdoor fire on a regular basis, plus an old 50 gallon oil drum that I knocked holes in with a pick axe that does a great job of burning garden refuse that wont compost.
Mind you I have already burnt myself loading it with vegetation, because the oil drum was glowing dull red!! I am being a lot more careful and using a pitchfork now.

....you don't get as big holes with a pitchfork.
Those drums make good small charcoal makers too!

It would be good to know what system are you using. Windows 10? Mac?

My first giggle of the morning.
P.S. at the rate MY oil drum burns, forget charcoal! There is usually almost no ash, let alone charred wood left.
Hang on - are we going off topic here?

This seemed to work for a while, but sadly, I'm noticing know, the gremlins remain.

Huge thumbs up for you, man! I'm working 100% remotely at the moment (just audio production / programming), it's great you can go out and about once in a while and do it safely 👍
(Putting the newfound (to me) emoji functionality to good use there, haha)
