Default ROBOT VOICE

Hey everyone...

Any tips on creating a robot sounding effect over some vocals?

... On Reaper obviously.

ta!

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "robot voice", but I'd guess that you could get what you need with ReaVocode, which is included with Reaper. It can be a bit tricky to set up, but I've used it for "talking instruments" and it works great. It gets the sound from whatever virtual (or real) instrument you want, so there a lot of potential sounds.

Essentially you do the vocal on one track and the instrument on another, and them join them together with the vocoder. You can search around the web for help, but this thread should get you started: http://forum.cockos.com/archive/index.php/t-15136.html

Like most things, the performance will be a huge part of making a voice sound like a robot. And different robot personnae will benefit from different voices as well - cute robot or scary robot for instance. For effects for some reason I think of a ring modulator. You can find one in the JS plugins - Liteon/ringmodulator. Maybe some distortion or fuzz of some kind? Strong compression to flatten the dynamic range? Some radical EQ could make the sound boomy and gloomy and doomy, or squeaky and silly depending on how your twist the knobs.

Good advice, Fran. The vocoder approach I recommended will definitely yield some very interesting sounds, but it's not the simplest thing in the world, especially for somebody unused to Reaper's routing. The things you suggested would be easier to play with, and may provide what the OP's looking for.

Like I said, it's difficult to know what's being chased for a "robot voice". Hey, it could even sound like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJD7sCnUtbY

Reavocode would probably be more fun though, once you got it working to suit.

Oh definitely. I've gotten some impressive results from it, and have gotten comments like "oh cool - you did that ELO thing!"

Ringmod will get you the old dalek / cyberman voices.

+1 for reavocode if you want anything more modern.

Robot Voice, robot voice, all of the kids love the robot voice...

Robot Voice

But seriously, are we talking the regular old Autotune effect that has become so popular lately, or the Old School type robot voice like the Cylons had...
