Default Routing doubt

hi all..

just got a little doubt about routing..

I'm mixing a veeeery busy mix but some instruments haven't been properly recorded thus they're sounding quite thin

I've been into the ReaMIX book (very sweet and useful book btw) and I want to make the percussion section sound fuller and wider.

but I want to get it from routing possibilities offered by Reaps first before applyin a space expander plugin.

I'm basically using this Mix I already know well since is super busy (and very challenging) to see how I can improve it with Reaps possibilities. (did this in Live 8)

it's actually an exercise

I've got 5 tracks into a PERCUSSION folder track (6 tracks total)

I'd love to make a copy of the PERCUSSION output (the main folder track that includes the outputs from djembè-shakes etc..)

I create a track at the end of the folder and name it GHOST PERC

assign a RECEIVE from the PERCUSSION output

BUT

if the GHOST PERC track is inside the folder it DOESN'T receive anything from the PERCUSSION track..

as soon as I remove it from the PERC folder then it starts to receive the output.

don't get it why

I'm surely missing a part of the Track-Folder-Output relationship

ideas?

Any track within a folder normally automatically sends its output to the folder track.

So if you then "Received" the folder's output on the track you would have a feedback loop. AAArrgh! Reaper prevents feedback loops (you can disable it in your Project Settings but turn everything down and go carefully, sooner or later you will forget that setting and potentially damage your monitor or ears or both).

Just keep the new track outside the Percussion folder, as you have found.

I personally feel that keeping that setting on is an important safety feature and FAR outweighs any benefit you might gain by disabling it. Sweetbutt, your only real option is to keep your Ghost track outside the folder (sorry if I'm overstating the obvious, but its dangerous stuff).

i have enabled feedback routing, no problem...just remember to enable the "mute master if volume exceeds x db"-option

There you go. I sort of stand corrected. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Sweetbutt is still going to run into problems with his arrangement, right?

wait wait!

actually I got wrong! ..

I'm still missing a part

of course a child track sends it's out to the folder track..

but I wanted to do the opposite..

I wanted to have a ghost track of the Folder's out to be treated seperately

now...this is not possible. it just have to stay outside the folder and be an individual track..

so the missing part is:

why the folder's output cannot be sent to one of its (empty) child tracks?

maybe has something to do with their father-child relationship?

a folder/father track cannot send its output to one of its children tracks?

I would like to figure out why exactly for a deeper routing understanding

yes it can...but you will get feedback unless you disable the parent-send. but then its not much use i guess

sorry for beeing thick, but im not sure exactly what it is you want to achieve?

I think he just answered my question. Sweetbutt, you should not put your Ghost track inside the folder. The whole point of the hierarchy is that it runs in one direction. Keep it outside for the desired results.
