Default Lost your MIDI Editor window?

This has happened to several users. I know that the guys are investigating the underlying cause of the problem but meanwhile this is how to recover the Editor window:

-- on the View menu, select "Cascade all floating windows".
-- or, in the Action List: "Reset position (cascade) all floating windows".

Good idea, DarkStar.
This one is ripe enough to be a sticky tip I bookmarked for the next time the question arises.

Though, I'd prefer a possibility to reset "lost" windows from within Reaper.

Problem is that we're packed with stickies (and noone ever seems to read them, so if you're looking for a safe place to store your passwords, credit card numbers... you catch my drift...) and that's why I moved it here where it's less crowded sticky-wise and likely to be needed most.

Like Justin said in the quote, if the midi editor coords in the ini file got saved wrong for some reason, it's better to delete those lines completely (and let Reaper put the editor in the default location the next time it opens) than to edit the locations.

By the way, have people noticed users saying that this happens to any window besides the MIDI editor?

Also, does anyone have an example of what the coords look like when they are corrupted? That would help narrow down where the corruption is happening.

I think I remember someone had managed to hide his floating docker behind the windows taskbar... I guess it could happen with any floating window.

I don't think Reaper corrupts something there (at least in the majority of cases). It's more to do with people quickly dragging the whole window aside and forget I believe, or with people switching to a single monitor system after having used those windows on the secondary monitor (don't know if the latter still happens, but remember that it was a problem occasionally).

I've noticed that the editor will open, but when it does, there is no grid and I can't edit notes at all - is this the same issue?

No. That seems to be one for a thread of it's own. Best to post a screenshot with it, I think.
Maybe it just opens with the source area out of view? There's a MIDI editor action "View: Size to fit content", does it help running that action?

We'll add an action to reset floating window positions.

That should do the trick Thanks a lot.

I am thinking about how to make it possible that the user having that problem somehow stumbles over the solution by himself. It isn't really worth a menu entry, let alone an entry in the preference, but then again... it isn't very likely a user would search the action list when he misses his MIDI editor and users that know the action exists can easily edit it out of the menu.

... and the View menu, as "Cascade all floating windows." DarkStar, it might be worth editing the top of your first post, to save people time if they are searching for this answer.

Well how can I create a manual button to open Midi Editor? I suppose you have to double click on Midi events region. But what if I have to open and program Midi event from start.

Any shortcut I can set to straight away Open Midi Editor?

Open the Action List:
-- find "Open items in primary external editor",
-- add a keyboard shortcut to that action (I've used Ctrl+e).

That's it.

Thanks. Yeah by default for that item its Ctrl+Alt+E. But pressing that doesnt open the Midi Editor directly. All I want is to have a Shortcut so that I can Open the Midi Editor. I hope for the next release of Reaper we have a Midi Editor Button to open directly.

?

I don't understand - isn't Ctrl+Alt+e a shortcut?

If you want it done on a toolbar button, then you can customize the main toolbar, add a new button and assign the action to that button. Have a look at Chapter 13 in the User Guide.

Mods - it might better to split these last few replies off into their own thread.

Well I understand my friend but the Ctrl+Alt+E doesnt open Midi Editor directly. I mean to say you have to record Midi and double click on it to Open the Midi Editor.

How can I enable so that I can directly open a Midi Editor thats my question.

Any Solution to this Guys. The Midi Editor can only be open if there is a Midi events on the regions. There should be a exclusive button for midi editor if one has to program from start.

Default How do I have 2 midi editor windows?

Previously I was able to edit 2 separate midi tracks side-by-side in 2 separate midi windows - great for string arrangements. Now for some reason I cannot. What can I do? - have tried everything.

Not sure if I'm replying in the right area -
I can open my midi editor,
but it has no menu bar. . .
which makes some things a little tricky.
Is there an action or solution for this, please?

any help is greatly appreciated.

If you only see a blank toolbar, the standard toolbar has perhaps been switched. Right-click on the blank toolbar and re-select "MIDI piano roll toolbar". Or go to Actions and run "Toolbar: Switch to MIDI piano roll toolbar".

I see a row of icons at the top of the window, but not the usual menu.
The icons are fine, but far more limited than the menu was.
e.g., if I wanted to load some vst note names or change the midi note representations from drums (triangle) to keyboards (rectangle) ,
how do i do this now?

I can also see that this (of course ) has to be some setting I've invoked
because I just opened an old project and the midi editor menu - all intact.
So I know this is pretty basic,
but soon I will be stuck without that menu
any thoughts are welcome.
thanks

cheers

I did try your suggestion, but the midi piano roll toolbar was already selected, and even after re-selecting it, made no difference. . .
i'm open to ther suggestions ?

Docked MIDI editor doesn't show the menu bar. Maybe your older project had a floating MIDI editor window, so you had the menu bar visible there?

Could you upload some screenshots of the MIDI editor with and without the menu?

I couldn't get the main docker window visible a while back. It had something to do with one monitor of a multi monitor display turned off. I can't remember how I got it back; 30 minutes of trying things basically.

As mentioned in the first post, try View -> Cascade all floating windows.

If this fails, open REAPER.ini, and find the coordinates for the window (they will end with _x and _y) and change them to something on-screen like 0.

Thsnks Julian. I think I'll write that tip backwards on my forehead, so the next time it happens I can look in the mirror and see it.

Over the years I've had this happen with lots of different windows. It usually occurs when one monitor of a multimonitor display is turned off when starting or exiting Reaper. Windows I've 'lost':

Midi event filter
Dynamic Split settings
Various floating dockers
ReaConsole
Actions list
Floating Mixer

Probably a few others...

The coords in reaper.ini get crazy numbers, like -3500, 7600, stuff like that.

The tip about just deleting the coord entry lines is great! Much better than guessing new numbers.

But I'll use Cascade Floating Windows as my first option.

[Edit] I forgot I had posted prior posts. Perhaps this one is redundant.

Philbo, you digging up this old thread probably helps me a bit too. I have a dual monitor set up and change inputs on one of them off all the time. Windows doesn't recognize that, unfortunately... so it causes me problems. I'll try this cascading thing work around. Right now I'm using an action to move modal windows to my mouse cursor, but that only helps with a very small amount of types of windows.
