Well, there is no width without stereo.

You could keep your track mono and send it to a stereo reverb, but that's still technically making it stereo. You have to introduce a difference between left and right to get width.

A mono track doesn't have "width". It plays equally in the left & right channels, placing it in the phantom center. (Or with regular Dolby Pro Logic movie-mode it would be steered to the center speaker.)

There are various "simulated stereo" or "widening" effects but be aware that they can often cause weird "phasing" (comb filtering) when played-back on a mono system (like a phone).

I've done it "manually" using complementary EQ in the left & right channels. Note that +3dB double the power so the complement to +3dB is -infinity and there is no complement for any boost greater than +3dB. (I made an Excel chart to find the complement to -12dB or whatever the maximum of my EQ was at the time.)

If you make a stereo file with identical left & right channels and then invert one channel, it will make a "spacey" widening effect, but the bass will be canceled acoustically and it will totally cancel to silence if played-back on a mono system. ...That's just something to play with. I wouldn't do something like that on a "real project". (You'll get the same effect if you reverse the +/- connections on one speaker.)

The complement to doubling is halving, which is -3db.

10 ^ (3/10) ~= 2
10 ^ (-3/10) ~= 0.5

I agree with everything else you said though.

Also Haas effect - delay one side by 40 ms or less.

Stereo modulation effect like chorus or phaser, or ADT.

Stereo or ping-pong delay.

Infected Mushroom Wider (https://polyversemusic.com/products/wider/) and Izotope Ozone Imager (https://www.izotope.com/en/products/ozone-imager.html) are both great plugins that will give a mono source stereo width/image without issues in mono....and both are free!

Yes, but I think the point is that 1 + 1 doesn’t equal 2 + 0.5 but rather 2 + 0.

What everyone else said of course.

What's the track of?
What do you want it to sound like in the mix? ie. Describe the "wide" element you hear in your head more.

You're trying to ask how to do something with an element of your mix. You'll get more relevant answers if you tell us what that is!
