Default Groove markers

Hello, I'm trying to learn how to capture grooves and groove quantize both MIDI and audio. I've found out about the SWS extension and the groove tool, and I made a few test runs.

During my research, I found many references to groove markers, but I couldn't find much about them in the manuals, or by googling. Even Kenny Gioia doesn't appear to have made any tutorial about that!

Can you advise me about some good sources? I'd like to learn the use of these elusive groove markers. I would also like to understand the relationship between groove, tempo, project and stretch markers. It is a bit confusing to me at the moment.

Thank you!

Welcome to the Reaper forums!

I'll try to give some hints. Basically the different markers are used for different purposes:

Project Markers: for marking different sections in a project (like, for instance intro, verse, chorus, etc):
Stretch Markers (for stretching audio): https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php#AqsIBFjcM_4

Tempo Markers (for tempo changes): https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php#6sQVeghwRsI

Groove Markers

I only had a quick look at this (haven't used them myself, so far), but it seems like there are some Groove Marker related Actions available in the Action List (shown at around 0:44 in the video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIc23K_sIDs

You can, for instance, try something like this:
  1. Open the Groove Tool via the Extensions menu
  2. Apply a Groove to a selected MIDI item
  3. Use SWS/FNG: Get groove from selected media items from the Action List
  4. Use one of the SWS/FNG: Toggle groove markers Actions to show/hide the Groove Markers

But I couldn't find much info about the Groove Markers itself, either.

EDIT: According to this post they work as grid lines to which things can be snapped to: https://forum.cockos.com/showpost.ph...59&postcount=7

Thank you, solger! Your hints were enough to get me going: although groove markers remain somewhat elusive, the last link you provided was an indirect source of information. By following it and exploring a bit, I found out about mpl quantize tool. Wow.

I'm passionate about quantizing to grooves made from my acoustic recordings. Even simple finger tapping yields usable results.

I may come forward with more questions about this in due time. Thanks again.
