3.13 OS X Render To MP3 crash

I tried to consolidate and export a 2-track poly BWF to a 96Kb MP3 and I had lots of crashes. Nothing that I couldn't recover from quickly but it was disconcerting. I also got and error message saying the project (and I think that it meant the export) wasn't saved, Reaper froze, but, in fact, the MP3 was saved to the correct file. "Error creating project file. Project not saved" was the Reaper error message. When I re-opened Reaper and tried to open the recent file of the original track (BWF) or the MP3 file, Reaper told me that there was no such project and deleted the file names from the Recent Files menu. What do I need to do differently?
