Default That surf guitar sound with free vst

Any suggestion to approach the surf guitar sound with free VST?

My chain was JS tremolo (very lightly) and SoftAmp 25 ( http://www.soft-amp.com/softamp-fm25 ) with its integrated reverb but I eliminated the amp as it was unstable once.
Now I'm using another amp with VOS nasty delay or a reverb vst called spring or ambience.

Any other surfer around?

The stock Convolution Amp/Cab Modeler isn't awful. It's got OK fender-style heads and cabs.

If that's a bit too clean, you can put JS: Tube Amp in front.

There's a pretty good spring style 'verb over here:
https://geraintluff.github.io/jsfx/

Or you might want to try the demo of Spirit reverb
http://aegeanmusic.com/spirit-reverb

There's a bunch of spring IRs you can google for, and then stick into Reaverb.

You might get results with more chamber-y verb - like these "swimming pool" IRs http://emmanuelderuty.com/pages/impulses/#pool

(There doesn't seem to be much in the way of good, *free*, proper chamber IRs )

And of course, stick with the trem - also some folks swear by a little bit of slapback echo to help bring the "splash" up.

Thanks a lot Jrk, I didn't think about the JS fender amp and using IRs!
And yes I'm using NastyDLA for a slapback effect..

Yep, Devil's Spring is good in its way - I don't like the level control - it's awkward and it always passes some dry - but good enough as an insert. Probably works well live, although I think the early echo, while splashy, is a bit strong. Matter of taste. Deffo one to try.

A good spring reverb is essential but don't forget that back in the day they often used tube-driven outboard reverb units plugged into the front of a loud amp. A little distortion on the reverb if not obviously on the guitar sound itself, was not uncommon.

Put the reverb before the amp in the effects chain and crank the amp enough for a little distortion. The amp distortion adds compression which makes the initial splash sit better in the mix but also makes the decay time seem longer. Often a reverb with shorter decay time (2 - 3 seconds) works better than the longer tails (4 - 5 seconds) we've come to expect on say blackface Fender amps.

If the reverb is working for you but the guitar sound isn't clean enough, give the guitar channel its own amp for its clean tone and mix with a copy of the guitar on a parallel channel with reverb and amp.

Youtube is full of people with surf rock compliations and playlists. It's a great resource for reference material to check your sound against.

Yes Devil's Spring-verb was my first favorite with its strong echo but it got eliminated after a few crashes.
DrKev order is interesting, I had no idea.

After a lot of tests of other plugins and IRs I have now the following chain:

JS tremolo
Epic verb (less than 2s)
NastyDLA (slapback)
JS convolution amp/cab modeler (Marshall JTM45 / Blackface)

Thanks again for all this cool advice!
