Default massive amount of visible envelopes causes laggy mode switching and automation copy

http://forum.cockos.com/attachment.p...1&d=1484062160

1. Open attached project and change automation mode on ALL TRACKS (ctrl+A) to some different than Latch Preview witch is currently activated.

2. See how sloooooooow it changes across all the channels makeing Reaper unresponsive for that while.

3. Now, hide all those envelopes but leave them armed.

4. Change automation mode to ALL TRACKS to some different than current one.

5. See how fast it does exactly the same operation.

THE END

please optimize this :-)

P.S. I can't make any licecap because I can't fit attachment filesize limit for that issue to be captured.

Even things like opening the mixer view and switching screensets takes a long time. I've seen this before in my own projects

Here's a video to go with your report.

Notice the delay between pressing a key and seeing the action completed. When the mouse is not moving it's "beachballing".

compare 0:25 to 1:57 for same action. 16 sec vs 1.5s

For me, this problem stops happening if I put UI updates into 'lazy always' mode in prefs.

Something about 'fast' mode is ironically slowing it down!

In my case changing to "lazy mode" doesn't change anything. I also notices that visible envelopes makes everything slower. Mixer toggling, changing settincs, opening vst windows.

Holy cow, how slow that goes with the envelopes visible, and so quickly with them hidden. Strange... Even changing the UI update mode takes a long time with the envelopes visible. And changing it to Lazy always didn't change anything here, either.

Yes, this sure needs to be looked into.

You didn't specify if you are on mac or pc.
I saw the response of Jon, who is on mac.
If you are on pc, than it's a "general Reaper issue" on both platforms, and Cockos problaby could find the culprit in 1 go. (fingers crossed).

I'm on W7x64 running 64-bit Reaper portable version. So yes, this seems to be a general issue.

Hopefully the difference in response between platforms to different preferences will make it easier for Justin to find a clue as to what's going on here.

It was a real problem on simple automation mode changes for me, hanging, beach balling etc. Then I changed my prefs.. but this fix only seems to work on mac from what I have seen since.

Also weird is that I had almost an identical UI issue but with a different DAW until I changed 'UI thread priority' pref. Then it behaved. But this is all very mac specific.
