Acid Pro feature analogs in REAPER?
Hello.
There are a couple of features I use constantly in Acid and I am wondering if there are ways to do similar things in REAPER? I would love to be able to ditch acid in favor of reaper.
1. I like to program drum tracks by laying out individual samples. This of course is easy in REAPER. But then I want to be able to replace the wave file for the track. (Keep the same pattern of "hits" but replace the sound with a different one.) I am aware that I could use a midi drum sampler VSTi to do this, but then I lose a lot of other abilities as far as editing/tweaking the individual drum hits. Is there a "replace .wav file" function that is similar to this? In Acid you can drag a file from the explorer onto the track info/routing/mini mixer (the thing on the left side of each track) and it replaces the previous file..
2. Is there a way to make events on a track be locked to measures/beats, so that I can lay out a drum track with individual samples and then change the tempo of the song, keeping the drum hits aligned to their position within the song? say, put a bass drum on "1" and "3" and a snare on "2" and "4", and then change the bpm... many times I am working with a track that is not to a click, and I use tempo changes so that the tempo grid lines up with the song's varying tempo. I need to be able to have tracks where the events (really just the start times) are aligned to the tempo grid position rather than the hh:mm:ss position.
I also use this to to figure out the exact tempo of a song that is recorded to a bpm that may not synchronize exactly with an integral bpm value due to slight clock variattions. (for example something tracked to a drum machine at 100 bpm but in the PC it might be 99.8 BPM)... by setting up a basic pattern and varying the tempo to home in on the exact value. If it is a long song that has repetitive parts, sometimes this might go down to a hundredth of a bpm (like 99.78 for example) to prevent the PC tracks phasing with the other tracks from beginning to end.
It seems like this might be possible in REAPER but I'm too dense to figure out how to do it.
Any ideas?
Does this make sense?
Cheers
dave

1)R-click item to replace>item properties>Choose new file(down the bottom).
2)File>project settings>project settings>attach to beats.
Welcome to the forum.

I realized that this is not the same thing I am looking for... I want to be able to replace the file for _all_ events on a track... Is this possible?
Thanks

Sorry, not sure.
Is this what people mean when they say "Shared copies"? Like, one file is used for multiple items---so if you change the source file, it applies to all items?
If it cant be done, youd be very welcome to explain how it works and put in a Feature Request.

It's actually another good argument for having a 'media pool' type window, as this is the kind of operation you'd usually do there.
Almost like a 'find and replace' in word processor, you'd right-click on a WAV in the pool (the pool contains all the media in your project) and tell it to replace with a new piece of media. REAPER would then replace all instances of the original WAV with the new one, maintaining time position and edits.

not sure if this will do it but when you use the item properties and select 'choose new file' the box that comes up has a checkbox to 'update all similar items in project with new filename'...I think this is what you are looking for.

"ghost" or "linked" copies would work well here too, IF WE HAD THEM

OK, that ought to work. It's a little bit clunky, would be cool if it didn't require a dialog... if there were some sort of keyboard modifier when dragging a file from the explorer window onto an item perhaps? Or right-click-dragging?

OK, this still doesn't quite work for me, because I want to limit the replace operation to only the matching files on a single track. I might have multiple tracks that have instances of the same file, but I only wish to replace the matching events on a single track.
In fact, I often duplicate a track containing, say, bass drum hits, and replace the sample with a different one to layer bass drum sounds together.

Oh, jeez, somebody slap me, I'm gonna have to agree with Emo J, here.
(JK, of course, Jason )
That's a very good idea. I think I may have mentioned it before, some time back(?).

It would be fantastic if right-click + dragging a file from the media explorer to an existing item gave you the option of adding the file as a new take. Then of course you could cycle between new and old. It's also a great way of quickly auditioning alternate loops, for example, in context.

Got a workaroud...
1)Select the track you want to replace the file in and r-click>copy selected track to clipboard
2)go to File>spawn new instance...this will open a second copy of REAPER.
3)In the new instance...edit>paste(or ctrl-v) and it will paste the track into the new project.
4)replace the file as usual and copy the track back into the original project.
You can use this method for storing unused/unneeded tracks in another instance as well...just cut the track instead of copy.
