Default Reaper recognizes MIDI keyboard but no sound comes out!!

Hi guys,

So I'm gonna skip over the "Reaper doesn't recognize my keyboard" complaint, because that is no longer true. I have two keyboards (Alesis Q49 and an Axiom 61 if it matters) Reaper understands both of them. I am able to record things with both of them. The only problem is that there is NO SOUND.

It would seem like there is a problem with the volume. But I have spent maybe a half hour checking all the volume controls- nothing wrong there. My mac is plugged into 2 huge speakers that work fine.

To make this even weirder, my Axiom 61 did make a sound once, when I first synced up the channels. But it was only for a second!!! Now it's gone back to silence.

This is my second night trying to make sound come out of my speakers and I am exhausted and out of ideas.

I should also add that this is my very first post on the Reaper forum, and my 2nd day with Reaper. It's great to be here!

Somebody please help me though. Thanks

Just to be clear... you do know that MIDI only transmits data and makes no sound on it own? It needs a sound source (a VSTi, for example).

What are you using for your sound source?

Also you need to set the track 'input' to your MIDI keyboard.

Update: I have gotten sound to come out the setting "Record-Output-Midi" in the first channel. Now I can hear sound when I tap the keys. Only thing now is I can't hear sound when I hear the recording played back.....There must be a different output function for this.

Hey bluzkat, yeah I have watched enough videos to know that now. (I am very very new to DAW's!)

It is set to the basic piano setting or "program" in ReaControlMIDI (Cockos).

Do you know how to configure the output so I can hear what I've recorded, as well as hear myself play?
Thanks

If you haven't already download the Reaper User Guide here...

http://www.cockos.com/reaper/userguide.php.

See section 3.26 Recording MIDI.

Enjoy.

I figured it out. I changed the instrument to VSTi: RealSynth (Cockos) and aligned the Input and Output with the same keyboard and channel. Victory!! Thanks so much for your help bluzkat.
