Add FX Chain by Name?
Anyone know of a way to create a custom action that will add to the selected track an FX chain (by specifying its name in the action)?

I'm relatively new to this, so don't take this as gospel...
But I'm pretty sure Custom Actions don't really accept text or numeric input parameters. They can operate on selected take(s) or item(s) or track(s), but how would you pass it the name of the FX Chain file?
It sounds like something a JS script would be able to handle though.
Again, bear in mind I really am not experienced in this, so I'll bow out now and let the experts reply.

I Suspect You're Right
I guess you are probably right that actions cannot accept arguments. Wish they did, though. I'd like to just be able to click a toolbar button to add a chain to track...

You can create and fx chain, name it and save it. Then you can add it anytime you want, it will all be there

One way...
I wanted a really fast action I could just use to pop one of my common FX plugins onto a track or set of selected tracks. Should have been more clear about that.
Fumbling around today I located a great way to use the Console feature (SWS) by typing c, then x (for fx) then the name of the plugin. It automatically gets added to the selected track(s). Then the console window can be automatically closed. Here's how to add the reacomp plugin to whatever track(s) are selected:
1. Type c
2. Type xreacomp
3. Press CTL+Enter (or CMD+Enter for Mac)
For us typists, this is a great way to not have to take our hands off the keyboard to open the FX window, then locate the plugin and so on. Just some fast typing. You could even make it faster by renaming some of your most common fx to shorter names.

You can use the Cycle Action editor to make actions that automate the typing. Also the Resources window and actions that use its slots for fx chains. You can edit S&M ini. to get up to 99 of most of the actions for that. Most of the available actions have about four to start with. A few hidden ones I seem to recall.

Good Point
I'll investigate your suggestions. Cycle actions sound like a simple form of looping. But like so much in Reaper, it's probably deep, only seeming simple until you get into it!

sure... ez
open up the S&M.ini file in a text editor... like Notepad++
find line #95 and set the number Max_slot=xx number to your choice
say 20 or whatever and save the file
start reaper an in actions find the Open SWS Resources window for FX Chains
now you have 20 slots you can add there... so add one and
set it up to the FX Chain you want
then go back into the actions list in the filter type in FX Chain slot
and look at the various actions you have now for the slot # you want to load....
Pick the action you want and assign a key binding to it...
Done...
go make a donation the SWS for giving you this insane amount of extra power in reaper.... %^)
