Default SSD4 triggering with a keyboard

i'm really scratching my head on this one. I want to use my MIDI keyboard to trigger steven Slate drums4, but anything that I try doesn't work.
I have MIDI messages enabled etc, and can manually input notes into Reaper using step sequencer but I get no sound when inputting, and every note note just follows the last.
I have no problem with synths etc, but I just can't get a sample to trigger with sound when I press a note on my Midi keyboard.
Does anybody know a way to do it?

Thanks all you lovely people in the Reaper community :-)

If you have synths figured out I assume the MIDI input registers otherwise? And, um, input monitoring is enabled (the problem isnt just plugin being mute while notes are recorded)? Maybe you have one of those long grownup keyboards and are pressing keys outside of the SSD4 range? Kick is on C2, snare on D2 etc. There's a map file somewhere on stash, or just past this in the text file.

Not to be an ass, but we can't troubleshoot a problem without knowing what steps have already been tried. We don't know whether the MIDI keyboard has been used successfully to play other VSTs. We don't know that MIDI input has been selected on the track, the keyboard selected, the correct MIDI channel selected. We don't know if the track is armed. Could be muted for all we know. We don't know what type of keyboard it is. For all we know, the keyboard might not even be plugged in.
