a new feature in cubase 4 worth looking at
As a long time Cubase Sx user I was curiously awaiting the new release of vrs 4. As expected, unfortunately, much effort went into plugin development - so that stuff is not much use to people who already have great plugs. They finally caught up to other hosts on a few key features, but other than that the main feature that actually looks like a potantially major workflow improvement is the Media Bay/ Sound Frame.
So I just wnated to highlight that here - for future consideration.
As I see - the host provides powerful user interface to a database of nearly all assets of music production on the workstation: sound files, midi, effects presets, track settings, complete track with audio, midi, or both, groups of tracks (full submixes) etc.
So in one browser window you can grab nearly anything from any other project from an effect setting to a whole chunk of arranged and mixed music.
Very nice.
For pro-studios the control room mixer stuff looks nice as well.

Yeah, that's cool.
There needs to be a new paradigm about how you keep track/organize the files to a project... I still somehow always end up with stuff where I don't want it, and have to be extra particular about deleting directories lest I erase something from another project.

On my PC I have a top-level directory named "_audio", which is a workspace for audio projects. Within this directory, I create a new directory for every project, and the project files (.rpp or whatever) and media unique to that project all goes in there. When I wanna archive, I just zip the project folder, when i wanna delete, i just toss the whole project folder.
It's worked well so far.

That's what I do as well - except triplicated on 3 drives, at the moment about 300 gigs of audio.
Problems come from starting a new version of an old project in a new directory, but then reverting to something in the old;
Importing copies from different projects;
Using default names;
Accidentally saving to a directory the program thinks you want (that's always a pain).
Yeah, I know the answer to all of the above is "just don't do it"...

In the situation of a new version of an old project, I would continue to work in the same directory, just with a new project file (.rpp). So I treat it as a new version of the same project...
You have maybe... only 50 times the amount of projects I have, so I think you have more experience with this than me.
PS - I like reaper's paradigms for file saving and organizing. They are simple but consistent.

The problem with that is it becomes a chore to backup, and you get a directory with a lot of similar names... and if you come back to it months later it's confusing. Then, if you try to use a file from the other project - and forget you've done it... well... uhg...

..and the sad thing is I've erased maybe twice that over the past few years.

I've no problem with it, I'm just tossing something out in case there could be some new approach...
