Default Plugins Scan is scanning way too many directories

I just installed Reaper on my Laptop, and for some reason it's scanning all over Gods creation instead of just the VST folder, and it doesn't end up opening at all. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it does the same thing.

Somehow I need to tell it to just scan the directories with Omnisphere and Native Instruments because it's scanning all these unnecessary Windows directories. Any way to correct this?

Once REAPER is open:

Options >Preferences >Plug-ins/VST - VST Plug-in Paths

Just put your Directories in there.

Hope it helps.

That's the issue, it won't open, after a while it just closes on it's own

With Reaper closed , try looking for the file reaper.ini (it may be in a hidden folder).

Open it in a text editor and find the line that starts "vstpath=". Edit that to include only a path to (some of ) your VST plug-ins. Save it and start Reaper.

You should now see (some of) your plug-ins in the FX Browser. If not all of them are listed, you'll need to add / edit the VST paths. Click [Options]. select "Preferences" >> Plug-ins >> VST and Edit them. Be as precise as you can, so you do not include unnecessary paths.

------------------------
You might be able to just delete that line in reaper.ini and start Reaper. I do not know, but there's no harm trying.

Ah VSTs...

You should find reaper.ini in C:/Users/YOURNAMEHERE/AppData/Roaming/REAPER. You'll need to set File Explorer to display hidden files before you start drilling down to find it. Then right click and open it with a text editor. The line about VST paths should be about 30 lines down.

VST folk do insist on installing their dlls all over the place. Sigh - I hate untidiness.

Oddly enough, I had a similar problem recently after a W10 screwup and reinstall. REAPER suddenly decided to start scanning every single dll on the system, which obviously would have taken hours. A brute close and edit of the reaper.ini file restored my sanity...

%appdata%\Reaper is a handy shortcut for that while also bypassing the need to unhide the directory.
