Default What computers and soundcards do you use for Reaper in Linux?

I'm curious to know what you people have for setups – i.e. what computer, CPU/architecture, sound card and Linux distros you use for recording in Reaper for Linux.

Myself I got a PC build with AMD Athlon II (passively cooled), M-Audio Delta 66 soundcard and Debian Linux 9. Works like a charm but is getting a bit slow these days, so I'm looking at possibly upgrading to an AMD Ryzen 5.

I still use an Asus P7P55D/Intel 750 i5 machine that I built in 2009. There is nothing wrong with it at all performance wise, but it's off the never ending list of Intel architecture security flaws for fixes in microcode, so I intend to build a Ryzen 3700X/B550 to replace it, when I can get an Asus mobo with the B550 chipset.

I use old AMD 8 core and it works great - no problems at all - I use the latest Linux Mint. I also use Fedora. I would go the route of Ryzen - look at Microcenter bundle deals - they are always so cheap and good. Any half way modern system will rip vs your older system. You can make a whole build under $200.

PC build with Ryzen 5 3600, Asus board, Nvidia Quadro K2200 and a Behringer UMC1820 USB audio card. Distro is Debian Buster with a lowlatency kernel. Works really great. A lot of computing power for a nice price.

Default New pc

Just did a switcharo from i4770 - Asus H87M; built some 8 years ago, it started to develope hw failure couple of years ago and the random system lockups got to me finally , to a Ryzen 7 2700 - Asus B450-i.

@ LieMfB,
I suspect your disk drives and OS are getting full of things
unrelated to audio production. Known CPU hawwwggggg softwares are
getting optimized, in order to even kompete/survive in the marketplace.
(I need to improve my Reaper config knowledge, and benefit greatly
from Reaper users sharing tips)

Not knowing your drive setup, I have two small SSDs with
linux installed, and they are fast. I keep them under 60% full.
I have not noticed any slowdown on them over the years. I have
an mAudio pci soundcard, nvidia pcie graphics card, i7 cpu
with 8 gig ram.

On a 1 Terrabyte spinning drive, I have three 290 gig partitions,
each holding a linux install (mint and two Ubuntu Studio) On those,
I have to move out recorded audio and archives to a trio of usb drives,
as disk access slows greatly when a partition gets around 80% full
which comes often when recording at 24 bit.

I have Studio 1337 (commercial optimized puppy-linux)
which boots into ram from an 8 gig usb stick,
and loads squash filesystem save-files
from SSD, and whoaaa Nelly, is that a fun ride!

I have three usb drives which can hold 9 terrabytes
of triplicate backups and archives.
I also have two 1 terrabyte usb drives for further backups
of recordings and finished works, and finished works are also
burned to dvds.

I am a cyberhorder. There, I said it!!! All 12 steps worth.
I must brutally enforce this regimen. At this point,
I can find both trivial and crucial things quickly.
Separate folders for serial numbers, debs/rpms, iso's,
categorized archives/installers,
text/html/pdf, videos, photos, audio project content,
samples, works-in-progress, and finished audio recordings
in both .wav and 320mbps .mp3

Finished audio works are also sorted by year of creation.

Initial recordings adhere to a naming convention that includes
abbreviations of the crucial plugin and preset names used,
as well as bpm/rendering speed and bitrate, if relevant.

Based on what I read, a pair of matching SSDs for OS and audio file,
followed by usb backup drives, seems to be generic good luck.
Cheers

Default Audient id4

https://audient.com/products/audio-i.../id4/overview/

This thing works perfectly under linux with Reaper. Performance is better than Windows ever was. I can crank it down to 16 or 32 samples if I want to.

It's just amazing.

OK, this is just showing off!

For tracking with up to 16 mics/Line-Ins I use an 8th Gen i7 Laptop with Windows 10 because this is the only reliable way to get NI and Waves plugins. I use a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 and Octapre interface. The projects will usually be transferred to a 6th Gen i5 desktop for mixing, etc. and this works just fine.

I use Linux Reaper with Kubuntu on a Intel 7th Gen Core i3 7100T and a passively cooled system with a high quality motherboard (ASUS ROG STRIX Z270G-GAMING).

When I record my 4 piece jazz band at a live gig with a Zoom H1n (stereo) this is the editing system I use with, in the main, the bundled Reaper plugins. It is my go-to system for editing general stereo and ancient 4-track portable studio cassette tape transcriptions.

I cannot install jack on this system and I use the native Alsa sound system, which works well. I have used the same computer system and its predecessors with Reaper in Wine using Ubuntu Studio and jack, but there seems to be little point in continuing with this because of the Waves and NI situation.

I have used a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 1st Gen very successfully with all of the above and also with both a Raspberry Pi 3B and 4B (4GB), but not with Reaper.

I installed the Linux Reaper armv7l on the Raspberry Pi 4B and recorded 16 channels of audio using the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 and Octapre. The latency was not great and there were some issues.

The Scarlett 18i20/Octapre is fine in both Ubuntu Studio/Wine and Kubuntu/Alsa on the Core i3 machine.

Gotta say I'm intrigued by it.
Did you have to do anything specific to make it work under Linux or was it quick to get going? What Linux distro/config do you have?

Thanks!

I plugged it in and it just worked. I'm using Ubuntu Studio 19.10 (soon 20.04), so JACK was already configured out of the box as well. Ubuntu Studio Controls make it even easier to manage than QJAckCtl.*

*What I mean by that is that JACK is already configured with Carla and it is also set up with the Pulse-Audio Bridge, so no audio source needs to be paused, ever. It all JUST WORKS.

I was able to confirm that it all worked while running Ubuntu Studio from a USB Key before installing.

Default On older CPUs

I recently figured out why several plugins don't work on my system.

I have an older cpu, it's a quad-core i7 860. I can't remember how old it is but I was looking up the error code that Bitwig produces (I still keep it around to test plugin compatibility) and it turns out the "illegal instruction" error code I get from some plugins is because my old i7 doesn't do AVX instructions.

I got that machine used when I was just starting to get back into desktop audio. It works well, but plugins that use AVX instructions (I've been testing several of the newer Linux ports of commercial plugins) cause Reaper to crash the first time it is started after adding the plugins. After that first crash, Reaper runs fine and the AVX plugins just don't show up in the FX list.

I looked up which CPUs do AVX and it looks like both Intel and AMD started including that capability in 2011. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanc...#CPUs_with_AVX

I have to upgrade my rig sooner rather than later!

By the way, what volume control / mixer applets do you use with the Audient in your Ubuntu system?

My recording levels are set manually on the id4. The headphone monitor doesn't remember its volume between sessions. So, I adjust that manually as well.

If I need to tweak a level on a track, I tend to add JS plugins for volume control. They work well on input and as regular FX.

Computer: Lenovo Thinkpad S440 laptop - 2013

-Linux Mint 19.3 (Used to run Ubuntu, but Mint just runs better for me on this computer)
-Intel i7-4500U (Underclocked)
-8GB, DDR3L
-Hybrid graphics (that I've had issues setting up)

Interface: Steinberg UR 22 - 2013

-Getting some Xruns, trying to tweak as much as possible.
-I was getting crackling noises even on my desktop back in Sweden with this interface

Tracking a lot of bass for an upcoming album. My workflow in Reaper is already faster than it ever was in Cubase.

Reaper runs great! No crashes at all, loads in a couple of seconds

I like Reaper so much more than Cubase, it's so lightweight and customisable.

You probably have to change the usb autosuspend setting, to prevent the audio device from aggressively "going to sleep". For Pulse it'll work well enough but for lower latency (ALSA or Jack) it will give you problems.

There are a few other things you'll want to be aware of, but that one thing is probably your issue.

Here's what I did for my system configuration (using Manjaro with a Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen):

Does "Linux container" indicate a virtual or emulated Linux environment?

If so, you might try opening a terminal window and issuing the command,

cat /proc/asound/cards

to see if the physical hardware is visible.

Good catch. I just assumed that was bad English, and that the only OS on the system was Linux.
