Default Multiple auto punch record (in a loop)

I understand how to make an auto punch record (selecting a range and recorded just there).

But is it possible to select this range for recording and to make the recording of the selected area many times in a loop (from given pre and post markers), automatically return to the beginning and start again and again ? Then to see all the made takes together and to combine the best parts into the final take ?

  • set record mode to record in time selection
  • set time selection to the length of the loop recording area plus pre- and post-roll
  • make sure that the option "Show all takes in lanes (when room)" is checked in the options menu
  • turn on looping and start recording takes in loops

You can do this in a new track if you need to overlap the loop area with pre-recorded parts.

You can comp the best takes afterwards. Have a look at chapter 8 in the Reaper manual.

Thank you. All clear, except

1) how to set the extra pre and post roll markers (apart from the looping record area itself) - i.e. the points from where the playback before the record area will start again and again and return from

2) when those multiple takes are done and you can see them all, how to deal with each separately (select/cut/take the selection to the new track), so far when I try, the cut and taking the portion somewhere else applies to all of them at the same time, not to a single selected take. So simply - how to separate a selected take in this takes column and deal with it independently ?

Otherwise this option looks great

1.) Simply define no extra pre-roll but include this into the time selection. Whole process is simplified. The excess recording can easily be trimmed afterwards. However, it may be easier to do the take recording and comping process on a separate track first and then shift the final take back to the main track. This is how I normally do it.

2.) Default mouse modifier is CTRL+ALT+left-drag to isolate a take from multiple takes. This can be changed in the Reaper prefs under "mouse modifiers".

sorry Ivo, forgot that you can choose to not link the time selection and the loop area in Reaper prefs. With both unlinked, you can set up a loop area independently incl. the pre- and post-roll and only record into the smaller time selection. Maybe this is what you were looking for.

Where is this setting in Reaper preferences?

Reaper prefs -> Editing Behavior -> "Link loop points to time selection"

.
