Default Importing multiple files at once

Is it possible to import multiple audio files into Reaper such that they import in a particular order? For example, in Samplitude, I can determine the order in which audio files are imported by the way I select/order the files from Windows Explorer. The order I selected the files initially, is the order they are imported, usually to separate tracks, but it could also be to the same track. It's not a "great" method, but it's the only option Samp offers and it's better than nothing. The problem with that method is, if you screw up the selection order you have to start all over again.

Right now, files are coming in alphabetical order.

If I remember correctly: importing media files via the Media Explorer (View > Media Explorer) keeps the order of the files as listed/ordered there.
General info about the Media Explorer can be found here: https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php#jxU-opt5ycU

I exclusively drag and drop from windows explorer - I have no real need for media explorer per se. So, I wish it would import via selection order but that doesn't seem to work from windows explorer. I'll have to check to see if that order is there when dragging or if Reaper is just dealing with what it received.

Well, maybe this is a reaper issue but sure since this is .NET:

Quote:
The order you receive them is the order in which they were selected. I encountered this problem once before and as far as I was able to tell you cannot get them in Explorer's sort order.

Therefore your code should assume the user selected them in that order for a reason.

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/...-dropping-file
I agree fully with that last sentence.

thanks solger! I had already checked out that video but there was no mention of selection order. None in the user manual either. But I will do a quick experiment and respond back.

Nope it didn't work there either. Even worse because it always loads the files to a single track. And they are still alphabetical. I poked through all the available options and saw nothing that would change those behaviors.

So a few more experiments later...

I can't tell how much of a problem this is for me actually. I predict there will be a problem down the road. But here's an example of something:
When I export files from Samplitude (there's an option for exporting multiple files at once), they are created with the song/project title, track number (the number of the track they came from in Samplitude), then the instrument/track name, and maybe some other garbage. But this "file name format" is useful because the original order of the tracks in Samplitude is maintained in Windows Explorer, and ultimately into Reaper. Not 100% perfect, but better than "track/instrument-name" alphabetical. As long as I set up Reaper to have the same track order as Samplitude, the files should plop right in. A mixing template based on that should get me most, if not all of the way there.

I can't assume I'm always going to get files from other places structured like that. That's the problem. Imagine an albums worth of WAV files in weird random orders. Which oddly, is how I just received some files from another person. Yikes

Thinking historically, I guess I'm usually only dealing with a couple dozen files per song. Maybe not even that. Would it kill me to import them one track at a time? Probably not.

OK. I just took a quick look.

This behavior can usually be changed via the When importing multiple media items settings under Preferences > Media.
When selecting, for instance, [Prompt user] it shows a dialog to choose between importing to separate tracks or a single track.

Yeah, looks like the 'click order' of multiple selections isn't considered.
And the selection order is from top to bottom as shown in the list (which can only be changed by clicking on a column header in order to sort by a specific/different column).

Yeah, I guess in some (or most?) cases it's probably faster to import files one by one via drag & drop (in comparison to doing a 'pre-selection' of multiple files) **

Depending on the track count, another viable option might be to import all files at once and then reordering the Tracks via drag & drop in the View > Track Manager.

** EDIT: in regards to the current Reaper import behavior

It should ideally respect the selection order. That's kind of a 101 thing IMHO.

I run into it importing multiple files to a single track, say I have 25 files (audio or video) that were created over time such as a live show, I need them consecutive as I selected and so on, otherwise it is one hot mess trying to rearrange all of the items when filenames aren't so easy to read (based on the recording devices they originated from).

Is there a utility out there that allows one to rename multiple files in a way that they start with a two digit sequential number? That would be an easy work-around I guess.

here's one (with auto-numbering feature). And it's free

Where you start the file drag makes a big difference in Windows on how they will be ordered, If you want to keep the selected order from top to bottom then you must drag the selected files from the very top item.

If you drag from say the middle then the copy starts there to the end of the list, and then continues from the top up to where the drag started.

Yep, tried all that before no luck. I'll check again but pretty sure there is no way to address this outside of Reaper.

Don't quote me until I test again but it was important enough I thought I tried "six ways from Sunday" and no matter what I did, reaper didn't observe the orders, click, drag or otherwise.

I whipped up a little test app, drag-n-drop WAVs on it, sort by filename or lastwrite date column. Select file(s) and click 'add to reaper' button.

AFAICT the order of the files when dropped into this app are in the same order as if I dropped them into REAPER.

EDIT: Zip removed

The app really isn't doing anything you can't already do by a simple drag and drop from Windows Explorer straight into REAPER.

One thing that could be useful is what Larry is saying in post #1, being able to set the order how files are added. What I did was add a column that stores an index number (use plus and minus keys, or context menu to change) which you could then sort to get any order you want.

EDIT:
Ran into a REAPER bug, if filename has a "#" char then REAPER fails to add the media, reported bug here.

BUG FIXED! +dev0920

It honestly never occurred to me that it would even try to sort it any way other than alphabetical. I guess I never really needed to, but it’s really not something I’d expect to work via drag and drop or the Insert|Media Items dialog. It seems like something Reapers own media whatever thing should allow, but I have never even looked at that.

One thing I have seen, though, is the one that should be last ends up first almost every time. Can’t really be sure exactly what steps I take to get there. I use both methods randomly whenever. It is definitely not the thing where 10 is less than 2, though that of course is also a thing in window in general. If I bring in 6 files, the 6th comes up first in line and even if ordinal/alphabetic is what I want, I still have to shuffle things around.

In Windows Explorer (at least 10), the one you clicked to perform the drag will be first then, next, next next including wrapping around until it gets to the one before the one you clicked to drag. I didn't test super thoroughly though.

OSX Finder works the same way FYI. The sorting filter order you have selected is the order files drag/drop with.

Drag/dropping files from a Finder window into pretty much any app you load files into is my SOP. The file menu options and the redundant Finder operations some apps have seem vestigial. Direct from the Finder is always the quickest method. Just like launching an app and loading a project file by double-clicking on the project file as a shortcut. Those two are absolute SOP... for decades.

There's a lesser known option to drag/drop files onto the app icon in the dock. (OSX dock, not the Reaper docker. This assumes you put a shortcut for Reaper - or whatever app - in the dock.) There are a few apps that use this as their SOP though. (XLD for one.) No idea what the Windows equivalent for that one is.

I think this has been said, but just to be dbl sure:

If you select one audio file in explorer... then add others via control key, then drag that into reaper and choose 'separate tracks' they will go into reaper, each on its own track and in the order they were selected.

It's the order they are arranged in windows explorer except for the one you clicked to drag for example... Assume files A, B and C which are all selected.

Grab A to drag them all, result: A, B, C
Grab B to drag them all, result: B, C, A
Grab C to drag them all, result: C, A, B

Or did you mean Reaper's media explorer?

In the attached JPG file, you will see a folder list of project WAV files. I have selected seven (7) files starting with #225 and then selecting the other files from the bottom up. So the original selection order was 225, 223, 222, 212, 211, 203, 202

If I pull them over with my mouse starting with 225 and select "separate tracks" in Reaper, 225 is first, then 202, 203, 211, 212, 222, 223.

If I pull them over with my mouse using 212 to grab with, then the order becomes 212, 222, 223, 225, 202, 203, 211 (it appears as though the selection order starts with the number I grabbed first, then increments through the remaining selections and then goes back to the start of the list until it gets to the last number before 212)

I've tried this multiple ways and the results are always the same I never get the EXACT order I selected.

In case you're wondering, this list was exported out of Samplitude. The order of the list is exactly the order that the tracks were from top to bottom in Samplitude.

Each file name starts with the project name (Reaper test), then this 3-digit number which is the track numbers in Samplitude (actually, it should be track 01, 02 03 etc I don't remember why Samplitude adds a "2" in front of each number).

In any event, Windows is alphabetizing the list based on those 3-digit numbers. Which is perfect because if I want to import those files back into Samplitude, they line up with the original project track positions.

And by the way, if I do this in Samplitude, it will import in the exact order that I selected originally (see attachment which shows the files in the order 227, 225, 224, 212, 211, 203, 202). That involves using Samplitude's file import feature though. Their file import feature gives you the option to choose to remember the selection order, and whether to import to multiple tracks or one track (along with various other settings to adjust for sample rates, etc).

The order you select files in Windows Explorer makes absolutely no difference on the order files are copied via drag-n-drop, it always copies files a I explained (Karbo's ABC example is spot on). The app I posted last will show you the index order when you drop files into it, and is same order you'd see if dropped into REAPER.

Ahh I get it now. Yeah your app gets the job done. It's as good a solution as anything. It wasn't obvious to me at first there was a re-indexing option behind the index numbers.

They should just take this code and add it to the program lol

I truly appreciate that you took the time to make this for us. Thank you so much Edgemeal!

hey Edgemeal... do you think in your app there might be a move up or down option to the file list?

and also, what about drag and drop into the GUI of it? So that one could pick files from various locations and add them to the list?

Ya Exactly what I was thinking, to make it at all useful.

v1.01 - Sept 22, 2019
* Fix: Index always started from zero on drop.
* Add item moving options to context menu. (+ shortcuts)

HEADS UP
Currently if you drag files from my app to a Windows Explorer window its the same as using Windows Explorer, that is, its possible to copy files, and more importantly, you could move the files if the destination is a sub-folder on the same drive!

In next release the behavior will be to always copy the files. I doubt I'll ever use the app this way but if I do then I'd rather have it just copy the files and not move them!

nice Edge and thanks... a little confused though...
I would NEVER want it to move files, ONLY to copy them... right?

He's referring to adjusting the order of the file names in the app. At least I think he is lol

The easiest way to explain is the app drag-n-drop works just like if you were dragging the files from another Windows Explorer. I've disabled it from moving files. This app just tells Windows the list of files you want to drag (with option to allow copy and/or move), and Windows does the rest. You'll probably only ever drop files into REAPER, but you could drop the files onto say a USB stick.

v1.03 - Sept 24, 2019
* Zoom list with mousewheel.
* List font size and column widths and saved/restored.
* Add key shortcuts for Re-Index and Remove Selected menus.
* Center ReIndex inputbox over app window.
* Dragging files to Windows Explorer can only copy files.
* Colorize files: ".mid",DarkBlue ".wav",DarkGreen ".mp3",Purple.

v1.02 - Sept 23, 2019
* Support TrackTemplate files.
* Saves and restores application bounds.
* Drop a folder to add all files in root of folder.
* Added icon to Exe & app window.
* Compiled so runs as x64 on 64-bit OS.
* FIX: Re-Index menu was enabled even if no files selected.

v1.03 - I wanted to color by file extensions, it needs an UI to allow user to set colors, etc, just testing a few hard coded colors for now.
