How to use compression
Just letting everyone know, the always excellent Recording Lounge podcast just did a superb episode on use of compression, with loads of examples so you can really heard the difference. I learned a load.

Thanks for the link. But is there any way to listen to it other than installing iTunes on my PC?
No way I'll install that thing on my machine.

Yes podbay looks a good bet. I thought you could stream it from his blog. It's worth downloading - I wrote notes!

I learned from the content of the podcast, but the experience of listening to it reminded me again how podcasts could be much better, more "compressed", if the speakers did writing and editing before turning on the mic and just blabbering in broken and circuitous sentences. The material could have been fit comfortably in half the time if he had used an outline or a script.

Haven't listened to the podcast yet, but agree in general. This is why I like listening on players that have a playback rate adjustment. Probably won't help here, since the material has audio examples that won't survive sped up, but when the source is just spoken word and, or visual references, it can save alot of time.

Sometimes it drags on a bit and belabors the point (I'm thinking of his episode on reverbs) but if the difference is an hour vs 30-40 minutes, I'm okay with that. I listen to them on the daily commute, so it's not like I've got anything better to do.

I know what you mean about being more concise but podcasts where they read from a script are a bit wooden sometimes. Typically these aren't pro presenters, they're enthusiasts and usually quite busy so the time required to write and edit a tight script then record it would probably mean they do less of them. I like his style, it comes across as enthusiastic and knowledgeable even if he rambles sometimes. Overall I learned a lot.

Finished it up last night and I think he did a good job with the presentation. Sure, it could have been a little more concise, but I agree with Twangothan, his knowledge and enthusiasm make up for it.
Thanks for sharing.

I listen to pretty much every major recording podcast and IMO the recording lounge is the best. I actually just went through every episode for a second time. You really hear the repetition this way but the good stuff really stands out as well.
