Any recommended tweaks for Windows 10?
After years of using Windows 8.1, I finally made the leap to Windows 10.
Are there any DAW specific tweaks or default settings that should be changed?
I'm not doing any office, gaming or video/gfx editing on my DAW.
Also thankful for a guide that sums it all up.

You'll be far more stable with less guessing if you only fix things that actually need fixing. Wait until you experience something that needs attention before you do anything at all. At minimum you need to know what the stock baseline is by installing what you need, then observing how it performs as-is first.

True, haven't installed everything, yet. But all these Apps really scared me. There's a lot of stuff that I absolutely don't need, like Mail, People, 3D Paint, Xbox. Most of these however are not uninstallable regularly. Do you guys have all that stuff on your system?

I do and I still run projects with 70-100 tracks and 250 VSTs without issues. I'm not saying there won't be anything to tweak, I'm saying wait and see what that is and if everything runs fine, leave it - if not figure out why and fix that. This also doesn't mean you can't disable a thing or two but again, if you tweak now, and do have problems, you'll never know if the problem is the tweak itself - been there.

All I do is turn off all of the power saving stuff and most importantly, check the power settings and make sure that your hard drives and USB ports can't go to sleep. Some interfaces and rivers don't recover very well from sleeping ports. It is permanently connected to the internet, I have set 'active hours' so that updates can't get in the way. I'm not sure if you can do that on the home version, I have pro. And that's it. Nothing interrupts my Reaper.

Here's a very useful guide, easy to follow:
https://www.homepcsupport.co.nz/guides/
Basic tweaks that work for everyday's use, too.
Also, I too would suggest disabling the sleep mode. It caused me many problems with audio interfaces; they tended to send a loud pop to the monitors when going to sleep and not to wake up again unless rebooted.

I used the focusrite guide (optimize for background processes, quit/kill unnecessary start-up stuff, etc.), the decrapifier script (from spiceworks) to clean up a lot of the junk and spyware that's installed by default and switch to something like the LTSB experience, and switched to AMD graphics after fighting with an Nvidia card for a while (not necessary for a more modern system...my IGFX won't run my display correctly) and possibly not necessary for a more modern nvidia card.
At the very minimum, there's an update setting to switch to the business/organization branch rather than the "most people" branch that seems to avoid a lot of the update issues.
Windows, in general, is really not as bad as it used to be.

I've been on 10 for a while. I just let it do its automatic update thing every second Tuesday of the month, and I've had no problem with it in over a year.
Unless you never connect your computer to the internet, I /strongly/ recommend regular updates (computer security is my day job).
Once a year they do a 'major' update -- one is coming out around now -- and that can (by reputation) be fraught sometimes; I've only had a problem once, a couple of years ago, and I got it sorted.

Karbo's right. Last year I got my first W10 machine, first thing I did was treat it like a W7 - you know, disabled throttling, etc. It was a total disaster, REAPER was stuck in molasses. Went back to stock & it was all OK.

If you are sensitive regarding your data:

Avoid AntiVirus - use brain.
Make backups before system updates. Actually Microsoft got worse in the last years regarding the QC of updates.

I'm with Karbo on this one. Win10 vanilla is impressively good at handling resources. (edit: in contrast with some really bad software folks install and then blame on Windows...)
I'd suggest going through Settings though (distinct from Control Panel). Particularly notifications, multitasking, privacy, and personalization.
Importantly, all of the above are "preferences" and don't interfere with Window's ability to manage resources, plus they can make Win10 more desktop-friendly and less naggy.
(Maintenance wise, re-check privacy options after feature updates, and check startup frequently.)

That's why I like the decrapifier script. It changes what updates you get.
That one that apparently deleted files...I didn't even get the option to install it because it wasn't on the business/LTSB update cycle.
I don't think I've gotten anything but definitions for windows defender since I installed it.

Not that anything is wrong with your method, just supplying additional info...
It wasn't available long enough for most to get it becuase the updates are staged over a number of weeks/months - it was only available for four days (1/100th of 1% of users) - IOW, I never came close to seeing it and my machine has no tweaks in that area. Also, one can defer updates for at least 35 days and avoid that chance - though I still have no general issue with disabling updates.

There was a power plan I had to change that made my biggest difference. I had to go to registry to even make it available.
There is a Youtube site that explains how to tweak Win 10.

The only thing I did to my laptop was to change the performance setting so it's constantly running as fast as it can.
It's 1.7GHz stock, now it runs at 2.2-2.4 all the time.

Even the defender can cause trouble. I have a dayjob in software support. Antivirus programs produce a lot of trouble.
My new machine - a Intel NUC - was bricked due to Windows updates.

I got a MASSIVE performance upgrade when I did the following:
1. Downloaded Latency Mon 6.70
2. Downloaded Process Lasso
3. Disabled Windows Defender (Latency Mon kept telling me it was hogging all my Realtime resources)
4. Deleted all the telemetry apps.
My friend wrote a script with made deleting the telemetry apps a breeze. I'll post the script and the instructions below.

At this point, if WindowsDefender ever causes problems for me, I'll buy another mac despite hating their hardware.
Maybe it's left over from the last time I ran windows, but around 2004, it flat out wasn't possible to run without it. That's not a chance I'll ever take.
I also never see it come up in LatencyMon or even using any real resources when measured by any method I can find. I really can't understand how it causes problems except maybe if you're still using slow hard drives. And, there's no point to that anymore.

Maybe I should spin up my "performance series" again. There is so much savvy/geeky users can do to get actual performance numbers etc. about their system and understand what it is really doing instead of guessing...

Not 'that' much there that is applicable now since much of that was considering 32 bit Reaper (some of it is though) but nevertheless, I hate "blind performance tuning" with a passion.

I agree with that 100%. You could easily disable a process that has dependencies elsewhere that you might need.
I will however use "Autoruns" to disable things like Google or Apple updaters from running and connecting to Google and Apple every time I turn on my computer. Also with Windows 10, I would go through every option on every page of options and alter the stock privacy settings.

Thanks again guys, lotsa useful info to read!
Meanwhile, the system is almost completely installed. But I already had some minor drawbacks.
There was an Intel CPU fix provided, that kept my CPU off from overclocking. I had to remove it and block it from the update list (there's a tool from MS for that).
Otherwise, I'm very happy with Windows 10!
