Default "&" Symbol in Menu Editor (what is its function)

can somebody let me know what that "&" character is doing in the menus? in the menu list in the editor for instance it says "Main options (&Options)." Is that redundancy or does it mean something? also many of the entries just have & symbols scattered seemingly randomly inside words etc. Nothing seems to be affected when i take them out and if i put them in they are not visible...

The convention is it precedes the key that selects it with the alt key.

&File means. Alt F should open the file menu. In lower level menus its the key only.

I use Alt-walking very often. It's much faster than mousing around actually.

damn. well ok i'll fix it then... not that you'll probably need this ED since i'm sure your system is highly customized by now... i'm more of a context menu and hotkey guy. i generally only use the menu when i'm too lazy to move my left hand to the keyboard. though i've got them highly streamlined and organized by now. except for a few details. i've been testing it out on friends and seeing where they look for stuff they know is there. intuitive menus make people happy. i just wish it wasn't such a bitch to edit them.

would one of you mind making a screencap of this process in action? Does every entry in every menu typically have an alt function and how do you know which letter it is?
