Default adding video along with my audio

Ok, so when it comes to my gear I have:

-A pc with a good cpu and lots of RAM
-I have Reaper as my DAW
-I have that scarlett Solo pack(that comes with the solo interface, mic and sterio headphones
-I also have a good pair of studio monitors

Instruments:
-I have an acoustic guitar and an electric guitar.

Amps:
-I have no amps, but plan to use amp and pedal affect sims that you can use in a DAW

I just got my audio interface and studio monitors yesterday and will be unboxing them and installing everything later on today. As for reaper, I'm using the free version but in two weeks I'll be paying the 60 bucks for the license

My question:
Ok now that I got telling you what I'm working with out of the way, I gotta ask that when it comes to video, How do I record video along with the audio? The only video camera I have is the one in my iphone 8+. Due to all the money I just spent on getting an audio interface and monitors, it'll be a few months before I can afford a camera.

So if I were to just use the camera on my iphone, is it possible for me to make a decent youtube video of me doing a cover on a song, even though I don't have the best camera in the world? And if so, what are the key words I should be using when searching for tutorials on how to record video along with my DAW since I'm going to try to do stuff with my iphone camera along with the other gear mentioned?

Hi. Firstly Reaper cannot record video although it can edit it. So the most common practice is to:
1. Record and mix your song

2. Plan your video (the"pre-production" phase) where you do all you need for shooting such as "storyboard", research locations, get permissions etc. where required, book "talent" etc. write a script if needed and plan the logistics of the shoot.

3. Shoot ("production" phase)
If you need "lip sync" then you will have to rig some sort of "play back" during the shoot. Because (usually) no live sound will be used you can do that either to the whole cast through speakers or "in ear" if only one person. Note that many music videos don't show much if any lip sync. Totally depends on your "script".

4. "Post production".
Editing sound and images, adding titles, special effects etc.
As I said this can be done in Reaper but (I will be murdered!!) I would say look to a dedicated edit package like Hitfilm, Adobe Premiere Elements, Vegas Movie Studio etc. etc.
BTW the last thing you need worry about is the visual quality. See here:
https://www.indiewire.com/2018/03/mo...ts-1201941565/

Now if you really wanted to record a "live" performance then it might be better to record the performance into Reaper (using separate tracks etc. to allow for sweetening etc. afterwards) while filming on the iphone. Then replace the audio afterwards in the edit program.

If that doesn't appeal then have a look here especially around 9.30 when he mentions using an external microphone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=Co21Gw7zqNY
That is probably the most important think to make sure the audio is at least half decent. I have never used an iphone for this but many "live" videos are shot with a single mic eg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mjuQ67YAnI
As to Search terms - some of the words in quotes is one idea but anything on basic Music Video Production will help. This eg covers the whole process;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuRO2bpA3o8 (note the lip sync tip at 5.25).

Is that any help?

Yes! that's very helpful! Thanks you!

Oh, and just to make sure I'm not misunderstanding a part of what you said, one method is to:

1. If I'm just playing a song on an electric guitar hooked up to my audio interface, but also singing at the same time, I can use my iphone camera(in which I do have a stand for it) to record me singing/playing that song while I'm recording it through Reaper.

2. After I hook up my iphone to my PC and put the video in my DAW, I can replace the audio in the iphone video recording I just made, with the audio that I recorded in my DAW(but of course make sure the timing is in sync with my lips and beat/timing of the music).

3. Anything beyond that is if I wanted to add any proverbial bells and whistles such as drum samples.

Below is a link to an example of the kind of video I want to learn to make. And yes, I won't learn this overnight. I expect to spend a year or more learning how to make this kind of video:

Yes that's it. So she is listening to previous tracks (and perhaps a metronome?) whilst adding the layers.

One thing I forgot re syncing sound and picture is the benefit of a clapperboard. See this: https://www.techsmith.com/blog/sync-...video-sources/
(Note that he suggests using an external sound recorder that would obviously be convenient for location shooting but if you're at home etc. then your DAW would be the way to go.) Using one will allow you to get the first track lined up with the first track of audio.
BTW did you know about the stretching facilities in Reaper that can stretch audio pretty much imperceptibly when used carefully over a few frames or less? I don't know how much drift you will get but most things would be fixable I'm sure...

BUT... I am aware all I have been saying is based on "old school" approaches and that I am getting out of touch with new technology so you should have a look at this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbiH2hKPrOI
As she points out the quality is somewhat compromised but the app does all the hard work!
BTW Ms. Nolte is extremely talented and I would rely on her word on anything musical (check out her videos - they are truly inspirational regardless of what genre you are into).

Cool, thanks! I'll definitely check those links out as well. Also on this link(https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php#6fz9wDv-mE0) I'm in the long process of watching EVERY video on that page, regardless if I'm ready to do the stuff in the videos since I'm on vacation for a couple weeks. I spent 7 hours yesterday just learning stuff and I haven't learned stretching yet but have learned that you can actually zoom in and out like crazy. So hopefully I'll learn about that too.

Be warned. iPhones use some weird proprietary encoding on their videos. Whenever I tried to extract the audio and resync it, the frames wouldn't match up on anything over about a minute. Had to start using my Canon camera to avoid the issue.
