Default OSX Catalina: Portable install of Reaper unsuccesful.

So i created a clean install of OSX Catalina on a external SSD Drive (APFS formatted).
Wanting a portable install of Reaper on this system, so i:

- Made a new folder inside Applications folder, called "Reaper"
- Put the contents of the downloaded Reaper .dmg file in that folder.
- Created an empty textedit document, named it "reaper.ini", put that also in the folder "Reaper"

I then start Reaper.
Outcome:
Reaper doesn't create it's contents in folder "Reaper", but in user>Application Support > REAPER.

What am i doing wrong ??

We had this problem while developing Ultraschall as well.
It happened on a Hackintosh, though we never found out, why it didn't work.

Make sure file "reaper.ini" doesn't have additional extension - for example, "reaper.ini.txt". If file extensions in Finder are hidden, you won't notice it.

Edit: just tried portable install on Catalina and it worked without a problem.

Default Bump

Also having this issue. Portable install works fine on the same Catalina machine, but once it's zipped and sent to another machine on High Sierra it points to the system Reaper resource path and not the portable install path. Has happened on multiple machines running OS older than Catalina

EDIT: just tried making the portable install in High Sierra and opening in Catalina, but same deal. Portable install on mac seems borked

(Tested with Reaper 6.13)

You can try to drop the Reaper64.app into the folder again from the installation-dmg. This had solved problems with Ultraschall so maybe it helps here too.

Anyone recently got this working? I can't create a REAPER portable install on Catalina at all.

Try this:
  • Make a directory on your desktop "REAPER", put REAPER64.app in it
  • Open a terminal (note the $ in the code below is the prompt, not something you type)
  • In the terminal, go to that path, e.g
    Code:
    $ cd ~/Desktop/REAPER/
  • Remove the GateKeeper quarantine flags (will prompt for your password)
    Code:
    $ sudo xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine REAPER64.app
  • Create a blank reaper.ini
    Code:
    $ echo > reaper.ini
  • Close terminal
  • Run REAPER64.app

Yep, that's it. Thank you.

I assume turning off SIP would fix this then.

No I think SIP and GateKeeper aren’t related. GateKeeper runs somewhat-untrusted apps using App Translocation (to prevent various injection issues)

I have a hackintosh with Catalina
I have several REAPER portable installs in my application folder. All working.
But I also have a regular install having its folder in the application suppor folder

Worked without any fiddling.

Default Terminal Fix Worked

Justin, thank you. The terminal commands worked for me. I'm also on Catalina and wasn't able to create a portable install.
