Best Bass Sound Plugin ??....... Help please

Hello all.
Usually I play a bass guitar on my recordings, but sometimes I don't have access to the bass guitar and wondered if I could experiment with a VST plugin that can give me a sound similar to an electric bass?
Any advice on a suitable plug-in gratefully received. Thanks.

imho all vsti or sample based bass instruments sound awfull
and its very time consuming to get them to sound at least a bit naturally.

you are better off recording the bass with your guitar and then use reapitch
to tune it down an octave
if u use bass amp simulation (such as softtube bass amp room) with this, you can get pretty good results

For really convincing results "Spectrasonics Trillian" is probably the best VSTi on the market.

With ~300$ it's very pricey though. But it's worth the money.

Could you post something with a guitar as a bass? I've tried that a couple of times, but it never really turned out nice.

not the very best example. this was recorded with a lp with fairly thick strings, reapitched and then run over waves gtr

I generally play bass on a real bass for the tracks that need it too but I also have a couple of the Scarbee basses for Kontakt that came with Komplete 8 and they sound pretty convincing, especially if you're any good on keys.

+1 on Trillian. All you'll ever need.

Alternatives to "real" bass so much depend on the genre.

If you want to have a go with the freebie route, you could try 4frontbass (v basic on its own BUT) followed by TSE BOD (bass amp)

Bit of EQ, chorus, maybe saturation...

In certain situations, it sounds pretty good IMHO.

I'm a bass player by nature, but when I'm writing, I usually don't have the bass plugged in..

I use EVM Bassline http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?id=191 when tracking bass ideas or just want to add that necessary octave to hear how the song is going before I plug my bass in

Maybe I'll give this another look then. I tried it out some time ago and dismissed it for some reason.

I've gotten passable results using the "factory" bass in the free Native Instruments Kontakt Player Free.
of the free vsti's, it's probably the most realistic.

There's an old Steinberg VSTi that is included in a bundle of "VST Classics" on their website; these aren't supported anymore, but it features the VB1, the first version of the Virtual Bassist. It's got a pick sound, and it varies the attack, the instrument and the string area plucked.

It's a Steinberg VST, and they invented VST plugins! Pretty sure it'll work, duhh. Mac, PC, and PC 64-bit.

YES! I know all about the one and only bass plugin, Reality Bass VST instrument that soon will come to Mac OS in Audio Unit format too. You can find and read about it at http://www.iridiumiris.se

I have it and I must say it's nice with the built in pattern maker and all, and the slap sound is fat.

Their site is 404, they are gone I think. Anyone know a good bass VST with patterns included, or a good easy pattern maker? I hand sequence all my bass parts and it takes ages.

Take a look at Odesi. It's not free (US$49), but you can use it to generate bass lines (among other things) and export as MIDI. I've just picked it up, so I'm no expert yet, but it looks promising.

I listened to a couple of the selections offered here and my personal opinion.
Save your money buy a modest bass there are some modest prices for real basses out there and purchase one for yourself.
Some cheap basses get very good reviews.
If you are creative you will appreciate being in comand of all things even the bass... and that is very important the bass is at the foundation if included in the mix.

Do you use these for funky type bass ReaDave? I think I got one Scarbee bass with Konplete 9 and it's strickly for funk.

I've got some clients that I program for that are more in the country vain and I've found it hard to find a good clean bass for that. I've got some old bass samples I recorded years ago that I'm using now but they are lacking. I also reprogrammed Kontakt's Classic Bass to get some decent sound out of it.

I've thought about Trillian, but I hate to spend that kind of money unless I know for sure it's going to fill my needs.

I've not used Trillian either, but it has produced the most convincing fake upright sounds I've heard to date.

It kind of has to. It can't know what to spit out till it's heard enough of what's coming in. Different algorithms cause different amounts of delay, and create different artifacts. It's a trade off. Maybe just don't try to monitor through ReaPitch while recording and drop it on after you've got your take? PDC can do its thing then, so you won't hear the delay.

But all of those algorithms are forms of resynthesis and can cause all kinds of weird glitchy noises. Sometimes distortion or other effects can mask that, but sometimes they just bring it out even worse.

I would prefer to set the master play rate to 2 while recording, and then slow it back to 1 and turn off "Preserve Pitch" for that item so it plays back half as fast and an octave lower. It's a lot more like exactly what you'd get from a bass guitar. You do have to remember that the guitar's natural LPF moves down an octave also, so that a single coil ends up sounding more like a humbucker, and a humbucker sounds like two humbuckers in series. So basically record a bit brighter tone than you're shooting for. Course, most of my stuff is slow enough I can usually play it twice as fast without much trouble. In fact, sometimes it's easier in double time! But then I have two bass guitars, so...
