Default Dustbowl Days

A bit of an epic, this. From an idea by Toleolu and with his orignal rhythm track. The sparse acoustic put me in mind of the dustbowl in the American midwest last century. No! ! wasn't there - I may be old but I ain't that old!

Your song tells a pretty grim story. It must have been an awful time for people to endure.

I like the nice mellow melodic guitar solo. I thought the choir "ooh"s were especially a nice touch.

Thanks. I've only seen the US Govt films and heard the stories, it must have been awfully bleak as you say. I'm especially pleased with the solo, it just worked first time. Wasn't sure about the oohs at first but they've grown on me. None of it would have happened without Charles' original guitar.

Great song.

Caught a whiff of Neil Young in there. That makes me happy.

Good performance, and the words are great!

Thanks TJ, we are actually in the process of finishing a very Neil Young influenced song, called The Loner - no not his song, just a coincidence that that popped up in the lyrics. I had completely forgotten his song of the same name and both songs are very different.

I'm huge NY fan and the geo political, almost tragic nature of the words reminded ms of Neil.

Cracking stuff!!

That rhythm track was just something I was playing around with chasing tone on a couple of different guitars.

Never really looked at it as a production type of thing, but Barry was able to take that and make it into something pretty interesting.

Huge Neil Young fan here as well. Saw him at Hershey Park Pa. back in 98, 99, somewhere around there.

He did Powder Finger as one of his last songs, always one of may favorites.

Thankyou gentlemen. I now have an upbeat song in the pipeline which Toleolu will be working on, it will make a refreshing change.

Morgon, I'm no guitar player but just sometimes something works. Hooray.

Great intro - bit of background noise
Perfect VOX merge

Bit much reverb to my taste.

Vox a bit too loud (at least in my setup)

Has some david bowie flavors

Great guitar riffs!

No matter the "background noise and reverb", the sound stands for itself = integrity

Dude! Thank you for sharing this song. This is better than almost everything the BIG INDUSTRY is forcing down our ears.

If I was the CEO of BGMscAshknazINC, I would promote you to the top of the list.

Thankyou for your review, Charles aka (Toleolu) and I are very flattered.

I must have missed the intro noise and I really struggle with where to place the voice in the mix. My old ears have lost a lot of higher range so every mix is a bit of a gamble. The vocal plug I was using was reverb heavy and I've since tamed that, trouble is it was an inbound effect. I'd be a bit loth to re-track the vocal as it works. Food for thought, certainly, and I'll try and address those points as much as I can. We really appreciate the feedback and the kind words. Cheers.

Pretty sure I was micing the amp back when I recorded that. The acoustics where I record are not very good.

Like I said earlier, that was something I was just playing around with, chasing tone. Never expected anyone would be able to do what Barry did with it.

My bad, as they say, I didn't clean up the track. I have now removed the extraneous noise, clenaed out the gaps and added a tinge of reverb to fill back the dead gaps. I will replace the track in Bandcamp in a while and notify you all.

Default Cleaned up version

I cleaned up the noise on the guitar intro and through the song. I re-recorded the lead vocal too to reduce to over intrusive reverb. Same link

Barry, the links not working, thinking maybe you didn't set it up for public access.

The link in the first post is still working. Actually I think the link in the first post contains the new mix. No background noise in the guitar and the vocals sound better.

The guitar in the intro is staccato; it clashes in the song soundscape. Needs reverb+delay, _ remove

Need to remix !!

I did add some light reverb tails to fill the gaps and am loth to add more, although I may have to, plus delay is a bit of a black art as far as I am concerned. However I will go back to the intro bearing your comments in mind and see if I can smooth those transitions a bit more. Once again thanks for the input, another set of knowledgeable ears is always welcome.

Barry, how about I re-record that rhythm track?

Wouldn't take much to get you a better quality track to work with.

Tears hair out and runs screaming from studio. NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
It's done, it's fine, it's now more than good enough. Nothing wrong with the track, I just doctored it too heavily. Sorted and put to bed. Closed. Finished. Finito! I will say this is probably my best bit of writing and production and your guitar track is what inspired it. Time to move on. I ain't touching this one again.
