Default Option to load midi only onto existing tracks

This seems to be a feature that's been needed for a long time:

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread....92#post2021592
(2008)

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread....62#post1626862
(2013)

When I load a midi that contains more than one instrument, Reaper creates new, unwanted tracks, instead of loading the midis onto existing tracks.
This happens randomly - I couldnt find a reason that makes it go either way. It either loads it to the correct tracks, or creates a new track and forgets the
pre-existing ones.
Though the item can easily be moved, this becomes a problem for someone with many files, like myself, who is trying to script an automated sequence of events.
Id love the option to either select the tracks to which I need the midi to load to, or the
option to have the midi load onto existing tracks (Unless there are more instruments
than there are tracks).

Thanks for considering.

You can load the MIDI item by not exploding the different MIDI tracks to different Reaper tracks (so things all stay in a single MIDI item).

Preferences->Media->MIDI->Import multichannel MIDI files [As a multichannel item on a single track]

Hi EvilDragon,
This option does not allow me to create a sequence that treats each item separately (as I require a different thing to happen with each)
More importantly, I have hundreds of such midis in which I need to Render each item separately (For my project), and the quickest way is to do it through Reaper with an automation - everything is set up, including the automation script. Now if only I could get it to stop creating new tracks and load on to the existing ones, I'd be set.

I may have misunderstood. that option was already selected in preferences.

Perhaps another option that might be relevant (if you're inserting multiple files at once into the project):

Preferences->Media->When importing multiple media items [Insert in one track (advancing time)]

This option seems interesting. If I understands correctly, it has the two instruments
separated but on one track, right?

Is there a way to interact with each instrument separately? Suppose I wanted to
delete one of them, is there a way to select it?

Thanks!

No if you load two MIDI items at a single time, that option means they will be loaded on the timeline one after another, rather than one below another.

Regarding interacting with instruments separately, I assume you mean different MIDI channels within a MIDI file? Sure, you can do that.

Suppose I load a midi that contains two instruments onto reaper, but only in
one track, how can I interact with them separately?
I can't seem to find a way.

MIDI editor has a Channel dropdown menu in bottom right, where you focus either on all events that the MIDI item you loaded has, or a particular channel.

Im taking a look at that option, I imagined that when i select 'channel 1' and check 'filter' it would only play channel one, but it still plays both channels, while only displaying channel one in the midi editor. What would be the most effective way to select one of the channels in order to delete it for example?

Thanks again

This Channel menu is just a display thing, not a playback thing.

These are kinda basic operations in the MIDI editor, though. Might wanna go through the user guide, or look through some of Kenny's instruction videos, perhaps? You'd select all events on a channel and press Del key...

Thanks for trying to help EvilDragon.
Anyway this is why I placed this in feature requests. It appears many people
would like this option to be straightforward.

You're probably right that with extensive research I can somehow find a way to do what I need - but maybe not. I did already spend several hours trying to find a way to do it, or a way around. But to me it would be logical that when you load a midi onto an impressive DAW such as Reaper, there would be an option to simply load it onto
existing tracks. instead of it randomly deciding whether to add a new track or use an existing one. (Gif attached above)

Update. I thought I had already tried this, but it appears that you have to select only the first track, and then load the midi. And it will consecutively load the midis to the existing tracks. I am confused because I was sure I had tried that and it failed. But so far it has worked consistently. Its embarrassing for me to have missed that.
