I have been goin crazy as the method you suggested is what I thought would work however I have sorted it now thankfully
My problem was setting the values in @slider ...
@gfx does the trick here.
Code:

x = 0;
@slider
slider1 != prev_slider1 ? (
x = 1;
//do stuff //
prev_slider1 = slider1;
);
@gfx
x ? (
x = 0;
);

Edit:@gfx section creates a gfx window at the bottom of the plugin which is expected any way of turning this off ?
