dbx 286s vs postproduction

Hi,

I recently saw a recommendation that dbx 286s is a great choice for recording voiceovers. Can anyone tell me what would be the benefit of this hardware vs doing the same thing in postproduction without harming the source?

You mean, using plugins to compress the signal rather than doing it with the hardware on the way in (which is permanent)?
