Default maybe boring but so essential: SELECTION

I know it has been covered many times before but I still don't understand why Reaper has this crazy weird way of selecting parts of items etc.
I have Logic, Bitwig, Ableton and Reaper open at the same time just to compare.

How much I do Love Reaper , I still think it's such an unnatural way of working.
Can someone explain me " in depth " what the benefits are please, (yes you can include the marquee tool explanation )
And no, Area51 script doesn't solve this either.

peace

I don't know specifically what you refer to, but I just discovered this thanks to another thread and it's definitely going to be part of my workflow now:

well , yes and no.
Open any DAW program, popular or not and do the gesture: select and cut.
So you just select and cut, no modifier needed.
What I really want to know is why it's like that in Reaper.

don't really matter what other DAW's do or don't do

IF you use reaper it only matters how you get what ya want...right?

so what ya want? want part of a wav item? make a time selection and either control drag out that piece to somewhere... or shift +S to split the item at the time selection limits... and then what... what do you want to be able to do????

Here’s ”in depth” for you.

Most pieces of software have quirks when it comes to interaction paradigms. That is a posh term professional interface designers use to shut customers up. Much like a record producer would start to talk about soft knee if a recording artist dares to have opinions on compression. I’m throwing it out early in this post to see if it works on you.

Odd interaction paradigms that feel unintuitive sometimes do so simply because they diverge from how every one else does it. If all the DAWS you mention except Cubase did it like REAPER chances are you’d feel Cubase was the odd one out. You would probably come up with great rational reasons why the REAPER way is the best.

These quirks often persist from legacy reasons. You start out doing something in a slight off hand way for some reason or other thinking you might go back and fix it later. That never happens because your backlog is full of more important shit to deal with and after a time it is the way your software is expected to work. If you change it now half your user base will go apeshit anyway so you can just throw your hands in the air and focus your efforts on something that actually interests you.

True story.

Alt+Right mouse key drag both creates time selection and selects item in one go here. Very nifty.

Was the postponed area selection going to be soemthing similar to Cubase? I.e. area selection on track items...

We shouldn't discuss pre-release features outside the pre-release forum (https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=22836).

guys, I respect your replies but I'm an old chap started with Protools (soundtools) 2.8 nearly 30 years ago. I checked every other DAW possible during the years and AS felt so natural in all of them.
I just hate that extra finger action for a simple action. Peace !!

I hear you. I started on REAPER way back so to me this particular thing feels natural. Lucky me I guess. The right mouse click area selection still feels weird, although it's muscle memory by now.

REAPER has so many quirks. Sometimes they make me go to another DAW for a while but I always return. And I always go "oh, but REAPER is so much better...why did I switch again?".

I'm one of those people having some serious issues with the grass on the other side of the fence.

Yeah I assigned Track left drag to "Marquee select all items and time".

That got annoying so i made a button to switch between that and marquee selection only, for when I'm not arranging.

I also installed "area51 selection alpha"
https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=219705

It does the job. but it's alpha.

I force myself daily to understand the way of selecting things in Reaper.
yet I don't get the grip on it. Is it my age or am I too Trumpy ?
Other than that RP is nearly perfect.
oh and please make a less overwhelming theme for the youngsters who open up Reaper for the first time. It looks so nerdy.

trumpy , nerdy ...... my english gets better by the day
