Default YAY - named notes finally, but why...

...is it neccessarily a seperate mode/view? Why can't it be an optional function of the piano roll? I think it should work like this:

I double-click a key to rename it and if and where I do it the note-values on the notes get replaced by the custom name (if 'show note names on events' is enabled).

I like to be able to see the keys and I don't like that I have to switch views just for accessing that function. As it is now it seems unneccessarily convoluted to me.

Other opinions?

b.t.w., on a similar note:

why is it impossible to view both the event list and the piano roll at once?

+1

I would like to see the names in normal pianoroll mode.
best would be "import filename list from battery3" for example

agreed. it really makes no sense to have this separate "named notes" mode.

example:

basically when working with a drumsampler i switch to "named notes" mode

-> now i don't see the C1, C2, C3 markings anymore.

but i don't have those "(1)", "(2)" numbers in my head. most samplers use C1, C2 ... note names in their interfaces too. so? DONE

also in the "named notes" mode the "show note names on events" doesn't display anything unless you enter something.

so yes, just put this "names notes" feature into the piano roll => done.

sure, I agree that it's important to see what's really behind the ridiculous names we might give to notes, but I would like to stress the importance of being able to MOVE the notelanes vertically in name-mode - making it even more important, perhaps, to see the key you're playing/programming.

also saving setups - of course.

One issue would be the size difference between the white and black keys in Piano Mode. While I don't disagree with the opinions here, I also will say that I like having the "all even rectangles" look as an alternate to a piano keyboard - especially for drums!

Perhaps a possible compromise would be to have a "combined" view, where the spaces in Named Notes mode alternate white/black like a piano, with the C1, C2 etc octave markings in place?

Indeed, this would be a major step towards "true" drum mapping.

This idea gets a +1 from me. I always wanted to display a mixture of keys and custom note names at the same time. This would be very helpful for midi instruments with keyswitched articulations like eg orchestral samplesets or RealStrat.
It could look something about like this:

I added the kontakt-style color overlays because i´d loooove to have them but the idea works without them too of course.

For mapped drums I´d prefer the "named view" look, though. It would have to be fairly tweaked over time to make routings to other instruments and channels possible, and allow muting of individual notes. But moving of note lanes would indeed be a great starter into the right direction.

That all said I am happy about any improvement to the midi side and generally exited to see what the trio comes up with. I am new to this and can tell you it is a thrilling experience to watch Reaper grow.
