Still a useful tool, but very different from the 117x ones.

I am still using my focusrite red and a couple of the classic 1176 clones mostly.
Oh, and MJUIC or whatever it`s called!

Not free all the time, but IK Multimedia usually gives away their Black 76 comp for free about once a year. It's probably the best 1176 plug-in there is, aside from the UAD ones. Keep your eyes peeled for the next time they are giving it away, trust me!

Otherwise, I would probably say that Analog Obsession's FETISH is one of the best free ones out there.

HoRNet also made a pretty nice 1176 inspired plug-in that was free through Computer Music magazine (the same comp as the FET mode in MultiComp MK1 and MK2). It seems that you can download it if you buy a copy of their magazines. You also get access to like a hundred other plug-ins if you do

1175 received some love recently

A video by Dan Worrell revealed a coding fault that has been fixed in recent versions of Reaper

and now thanks to James Peters there is a 2:1 ratio setting due to Dan's "they fixed it" follow up video where he is creating 2:1 for his drum buss with Rocket
(I recently started looking at Dan Worrell's Videos, wish I had started sooner)

Yes, most of the AO plugins sounds good, definitely worth a check.

Analogue Obsession is probably the obvious choice, after the built in 1175.
Also pick up all the freebies from Tokyo Dawn (Nova can be a compressor too), Klanghelm - especially MJUC Jr, Native Instruments - Supercharger. Also this oldie goldie for Windows:
